D&D 4.0

I'm posting this here to not take away from the other thread. I was cleaning my Laura's car off this morning since I let her take my trailblazer. and she had a country morning talk show on the radio when i turned it on. they were cracking jokes about his death and D&D and "nerds in mourning". If I wasn't already late for work, i would have called in and given them a piece of my mind about respecting the dead... On a brighter note, i heard D&D 4.0 hits stores in June. If the rules are easier to understand I bet we can get Laura to try it out sometime! With that, Warhammer and World of Warcraft... her progression to the dark side will be complete! Muwhahaha! Excellent my young apprentice, bring her to the dark side and your training will be complete! I'm not sure if I will switch to 4.0, and here is why: - It appears that the role of the Cleric will be nerfed with this rumor of all classes having healing abilities.
- 3.5 works very well, and I can't imagine changing a lot of things will make it better.
- The diversity in races, some classes, and Pantheon is going away essentially
- I've played and read about Forgotten Realms for years. With the completely changing the background by "simplifying the pantheon and making Faerun post appocalyptic like Ebberron, it severely detracts from the high fantasy quality that attracted me to begin with.
I love the game and have played since the early 80s and will likely continue to play, but depending on what they actually do as opposed to what's rumored, I may not use the new rules.

All classes have healing? bleh. The cleric is my favorite class to play! I always play a healing class in most RPGs and MMOs.
I like the fantasy setting. Have not read to much about ebberon since i haven't played D&D much, but I didn't like the setting what I had seen of it

I haven't read much of it either. I was turned off by the post apocalyptic setting and increased use of psionics. I prefer the high fantasy setting, but it seems that W.O.T.C. is bent on ruining one of the industries best selling worlds. Maybe I'm reading too much into it and it won't be as bad as it seems, we'll have to see.

D&D to me is Humans and elves and dwarves, casting spells and using swords and bows. Its fantasy lands and towns with thatched roofs and taverns.
not what I read about in the ebberon setting book. That just seems too, final fantasy for me or something. almost more anime take on D&D.

That's exactly how I feel about it and what I mean about high fantasy (swords and sorcery). If others prefer the sci fi approach to a fantasy based game, great! Ebberon will work well for them. Part of the beauty of the concept of this game is that only your imagination can limit the possibilities.
My problem is that Forgotten Realms has been around for a very long time and there is literally years of work and volumes upon volumes of material put into it. Based on the fact that it has remained one ofthe most popular campaign settings since its inception, I think I can say that I'm not the only one who has grown to love it.
For WOTC to suddenly decide to turn it upside down and completely change the entire world is quite disturbing. The premise is that they want a clean slate for DM's to have room to build again and make it their own. I say that if you want a new world, make one, don't ruin a timeless classic because you think we need a fresh canvas. If players or DMs feel that the pantheon in Forgotten Realms (or any other setting for that matter) is too complicated, they don't have to use them. But don't ruin it for those of us that enjoy the stories and history of this world by suddenly deciding to get rid of some gods/goddesses simply because you feel that there are too many choices. I don't get that.
Was WOTC purchased by GW?

All a DM has to do is create their own story to make it their own. i love the forgotten realms setting. I read alot of the novels. But when I ran a campaign, i would use the setting, like the feel and some of the locations and such, but the story and characters were all created by me. the Forgotten realms just helped set the mood and setting and some history.

And that's exactly as it should be IMO. But with the suggested changes, the history could be drastically changed, and the world will be completely different. No one expects to run into Drizzt Do'Urden in their campaign, but it might be cool to run into an NPC that had. Some of the changes to the pantheon are more significant, but I don't have specifics in front of me here at work.

Hmm. Now the question is, when 4.0 comes out, will players switch over to that? I wonder if the rules in 4.0 are easier, would players be able to use the ruleset from 4.0 and keep the setting of 3.5
Maybe I need to get a game of D&D going with a nice fantasy setting

Well alot of us have looked at the previews for 4th and a generally sceptical. But we are all waiting for its release.
Really cant start any 4th ed campaigns untill you have the Big 3 books. Players Hand Book, Dungeon masters Guide and the Monster manuel. So we are looking at a few months down the road until a flip to 4th would happen if it does.

Candice (my wife) was also embarrassed at first with the role play, but now she has taken to it quite well. She likes to DM sometimes as well. The game is very fun, you should give it a try. I might be into a campaign if I can find the time and it's not a late night when I have to work the next day. Let me know when and where and I'll talk it over with Candice too.

Yeah I'll have to read through it when it comes out before I decide whether or not to invest the $. I've got quite a bit tied up in 3.5 books.
