I'm new to the area...Or will be Currently in York, PA. I was just wondering about the local 40k scene...How big of games are usually played? What 'house rules' are in effect generally? How is comp rated? Etc etc etc.

Welcome on behalf of DaBoyz.
Games are typically played at our store (Baldo's Armory located at 891 Monroe Ave) on Thursday evenings and Sunday noon to six. Point limits are open to any amount and old GT comp beliefs tend to still run true.
Hope this helps and look forward to meeting you on the field of battle!

And what exactly is GT comp?

Welcome
Monroe ave is in rochester.
Old GT; it is no two falcons, fire prism, and three waveserpets with all the same weapons transporting same models.
..... unless you are playing shaun.

Well, old GT comp doesn't help me much. Only one I know of is one that says 'Don't play anything other than loyalist Marines, and especially don't play Chaos'.
Granted, in my experience, most comp systems say that on account of the general thought that any army that can do things that loyalist Marines can't do is bad...

Basically what is meant by old GT comp is playing a "fair and balanced" force. Over the top armies are frowned upon, but from time to time they tend to rear their ugly heads. What Shaun and Jay are saying is that a force that is diverse and represents your particular codex as a whole is what most players favor playing. No one likes over the top armies like 3 Falcons, or 2 Falcons and a Fire Prism, 9 Obliterators, etc. One of our members likes to use the guideline that an old school GT armies should be at least 40% troop choices, not two min/maxed squads. All current codexes are played at Boldo's, marines, chaos, guard, inquisition, Tau and Eldar. I hope this helps, but it would be best if you dropped by sometime, introduced yourself and saw in person what we play. -Doug

Well, I have 5 armies now.
Marines Alpha Legion Imperial Guard Daemonhunters
Plus I'm working on a Tyranid godzilla list (assembled, but being painted-Tournament on the 27th)
Next time I'm in town with some time (Usually don't have much on account of my schedule) I'll have to stop by. I stopped by Millenium hobbies the other weekend on a Friday afternoon. I've just found that it varies from person to person or group to group what exactly is 'over the top'.
I've played both balanced lists with many different units (Radical daemonhunters) and a themed list that is scary but extremely inefficient (My Alpha Legion cav list) but got tanked on soft scores because I won. I brought a nasty marine list to another tourney and got almost top score in comp (granted, it was a comp matrix that I broke to make a point).

They look pretty decent to me. Your alpha legion does have alot of heavies in relationship to troops but otherwise they seem OK. Your marines also seem to be based on the assualt cannon which some players here dispise. Overall they look fun and challenging, hopefully you will be able to stop by and play sometime soon.

Well, one thing to consider, is that I used the same amount of assault cannons/terminators in 3rd edition also. Not my fault GW made them that much better

I know we have been talking on the Dakka boards and based on your list above none will get dinged hard for comp. As for the FAQ's we will use the info set forward from GW I know that does not cover all incidents but most. Outside that It becomes; you discuss with your opponent before the game starts or call a judge over and we can give you a ruling. I know you don't want to make the trip here if you think this is going to be some tournament being run by five year olds and they use there own set of rules. I want to ensure you that the players up here are top notch and all know the rules and most play a RAW style game.
Guys tell Skyth he needs to cometo Assault Phase 07!
