Good 'ol kevin with his cattle prod ;D
Hey, hanging around with Doug is having an effect on me.
But it's time for a serious moment before I revert back to lovable guy mode. Sorry for derailing your thread once again Aaron, they really are nicely painted models.
Ok....
Ron and Chris, I'm glad that you brought that up about the Da Boyz philosophy. Between uncle doug's rousing campfire story last week and the comments made on this thread I think it helps illustrate the issues that have been ongoing in the past few years locally. By all accounts, people like me, aaron, joe, etc..., all started gaming around here well after the Da Boyz gaming group started up. In fact, i'd think it's safe to say that by the time we all started gaming in the communiy, the core group of the Da Boyz players had moved on or at least no longer gamed in the capacity that they may have under 3rd or 4th edition. I don't even recognize half of the people listed in Doug's list of founding members. I started the hobby at the tail end of 3rd ed and pretty much just collected and painted all through 4th with the only games being played were test games with my son. I did not start really gaming until 5th ed came out. By the time I started attending Millennium events I had heard of the Da Boyz but it did not resemble the group that is described from back in the older days.
Now, I have absolutely no issues with anyone in the community. My philosophy is that it is your time and money so do with it as you want. In fact, my personal goals actually align with the vaules outlined by Doug and the Da Boyz of old. I only ever try to play fully painted armies, I try my best to adhere to fluff and mainly, I just like to have fun and talk smack. You want to play a balls-to-the-walls list with me on a 1-off game, bring it. You want to play a fluff list, bring it. I'm happy to play with anyone and any list at any time if it gives me a reason to chuck some dice, hang out, and get away from my family for awhile. As most of you know, winning and losing is not that important to me and I think my track record against most of you proves that. Demonizing players for playing what they want to buy, paint, and play is just silly.
So, what am I trying to say? I'm just saying that to us "newer or pre-Da Boyz" players or those from outside of the community have a hard time seeing where people like Chris, Doug, or older Da Boyz members are coming from. But it is also fact that the local area is no longer being guided or steered by the Da Boyz. The only representation they have now is that once a year there is a big tournament is held here locally that is called... wait, it's coming to me... oh yeah, the Da Boyz GT! The values and tenants established by the founders are rarely, if ever, introduced to other established or new players, only occassional grunts, raised eyebrows (and farts) are heard from them. Now I figure that GW plays a huge roll in all of this, not just the players. With the introduction of 4th ed, they went away from all of the comp restrictions at their own events and in their rules. Remember back when codex's had a 0-1 cap on specific units, or they made chaos 'chaosy', or Craft World lists? Once they made it so you can run any number of oblits, or you can run 1ksons with Khorne, or removed the customizable table for creating your own nids, etc... and made it fair game for anyone to run anything they wanted, you can hardly fault people who started gaming after 3rd edition. They never knew the kind of mentality that was around back in 3rd edition nor was it enforced by GW in their own tournament settings after 4th. So why are newer players at fault?
If people like you, doug, chris, etc... want to revive those traditions and make them main stream again, start participating and addressing this at the local stores again. Run sanctioned "Da Boyz" events at local stores or have a "Da Boyz" night at the shops or out of someone's house. I had a blast with all of you guys 2 sunday's ago and I plan on showing up at Boldo's some more in the near future (as soon as I stock up on some fix-a-flat). Just like when Aaron offers a game at his place, or Smitty at his, I'll more often that not show up and hang out and talk smack. Heck, I had a blast having a group of people over at my place when the 6th ed book came out, I did not get a game in but I still had fun talking and eating with everyone. Or when Joe offered a paint night at his place last summer and I was the only one to show. (Other that the molestation, I still had fun) But as it is right now, when I show up at Millennium or any store on any given tuesday or saturday to play, its just a 1-off game with what ever I bring. No talk is ever brought up about playing a fluffy list or a comped format. This is where you folks need to get back to work if you want the rest of the area to follow your example.
In closing, this is not an attack, a flame war, a troll or anything against any past, present or future member of the Da Boyz. Every one of you (Doug, Chris, Jay, Ron, C4, Gabe, Norton, Ben, and any others whose name I am forgetting) that I have met, played against, or just got to know have been fun and has helped broaden my appreciation of the hobby and community. But seriously, if someone doesn't like the way I, or others, play and paint our armies then have fun busting our balls both in person and on the forums (in person is funnier). We all do it to each other and I think 99% of the time we all know its for fun (yes Horst, I do it cuz I luv you) but don't throw out the "Da Boyz" mantra or "WAAC is bad" unless you are willing to commit and help turn that around for our local community.
'nuff said....
