This was my last weekend to get in a couple of 40k games in under the 5th edition rules. On Saturday, Chris P. organized a gathering down in Watkins Glen State Park for a day of food, gaming and just hanging out. I over indulged on the pulled pork, beans, salsa and a plethora of chips. Aaron and I got in a 1850 pt game and I've included some pics below but Aaron has a batrep of the game posted on his blog. (Go check it out) It was a great game that came right down to the wire at the end. After the game we all took a walk on the gorge, came back and then had dinner. Chris and my son then played a match (Dark Eldar vs Tyranids) at 1000 pts. By then the day was winding down so we headed home.
Coming off of the rush he had from playing Chris at the Glen, my son asked me to play a 1k point game on Sunday.
His list:
Archon with blast pistol, Agonizer, Shadow Field, Ghostplate Armor
5 Incubi
Raider with Night Shields/Flickerfields
10 Warriors, 1 Splinter cannon
Raider with Flicker Fields
10 Warriors, 1 Splinter Cannon
Raider with Flickerfields
8 Mandrakes
Haemoculis with Sissorhands, Dark Gate
1 Ravager
My list:
Farseer with Spirit Stones, RoW, Row, Doom, Guide
6 Striking Scorpions, Exarch, Biting Blade
10 Dire Avengers, Exarch, 2xCatapults
Wave Serpent, Bright Lances
10 Guardians, Warlock w/ Conceal, Scatter Laser
10 Guardians, Warlock w/ Conceal, Scatter Laser
2 War Walkers with 2x Missile Launchers each
We decided on pitched battle with 2 objectives in our own deployment zone and the 1st HQ to die would become the 3rd objective.
I won sides and elected to go first. I pretty much castled up in a corner that gave my guardians ample cover saves. I placed my objective in the corner surrounded by the guardians.
Conner deployed across the board and put his objective behind the pyramid in his corner. He tried to seize initiative but failed.
Turn 1
Eldar:
I forgot to use my psychic powers and opted not to move on turn 1.
One of my scatter lasers explode a raider, killing 3 of the warriors inside.
My war walkers hit the Archon's raider, wrecking it. The Archon and incubi will need to foot it across the board.
My serpent tries to hit the ravager but it is just out of range by an inch.
Dark Eldar:
The warriors on foot move up towards the center pyramid.
Archon and incubi shuffle up 2 inches. The remaining raider moves up his left flank and hits my serpent, shaking it. Ravager tries to shoot at my walkers but is out of range.
Turn 2
Eldar:
I guide my walkers and since my serpent cannot shoot I flat out towards the pyramid with his objective. The only other movement is I shuffle the walkers to get a line on the raider that moved. The walkers hit the raider and shake it. The scatter lasers take out a couple more of the warriors on foot but he passes his leadership test.
Dark Eldar
He flat outs his raider since it cannot shoot. The Archon with incubi, the mandrakes with the haemoculis all move forward towards the main pyramid. The ravager is now in range of my walkers since I moved them up in my turn. He ends up destroying one of the walkers. The splinter cannon from his foot squad kills one of my scorpions.
Turn 3
Eldar:
I guide the closest guardian squad, my serpent moves up 12 inches and my remaining walker moves back towards the corner.
The bright lances on the serpent shakes the ravager.
The guided scatter laser ends up destroying the dark lance on the raider sneaking up on my flank. The other scatter laser takes out another warrior but the squad still stays.
Dark Eldar:
Since the ravager can't shoot, he flat outs it away from my serpent. The archon/incubi/mandrakes and hemmy all move up on the main pyramid. The warriors on the remaining raider end up immobilizing one of my walkers which becomes a wreck and knocks off one of the missile launchers on the other walker.
Turn 4
Eldar:
I hop the serpent closer to the objective and I move the scorpions out to meet the Archon and Incubi headed my way.
My serpent misses the ravager, one of the scatter lasers immobilizes the last raider. All other shooting was ineffective.
Dark Eldar:
All units on foot move up.
The Ravager explodes my serpent and kills 3 Avengers inside.
I pass my pinning test. Some of the mandrakes are in range to use their balefire and kills a couple of the guardians near the objective. The warrior squad in the now immobilized raider kills my two gunners and warlock. The other warrior squad shoots into my avengers but I pass all saves. The guardian squad that took casualties fails leadership and flees off the board.
Turn 5
Eldar:
I doom the Incubi squad and guide the avengers. I move the scorpions closer and shuffle the avengers towards his objective.
The last missile launcher on the walker ends up exploding the ravager. The avengers shoot into foot warriors and kill all but 1. He breaks and falls back. The scorpions shoot with pistols at the Incubi/Archon but fail to do anything. They then charge into the Incubi/Archon. The Archon goes first and kills only one scorpion. My exarch goes next and inflicts 2 wounds. The first wound is saved then the shadow field fails, causing a wound. The scorpions and incubi then go at the same time. My scorpions end up killing 4 incubi but the incubi end up wiping out the rest of the squad. He consolidates towards my last guardian squad.
Dark Eldar:
Mandrakes, Incubi, and Archon move towards remaining guardians. The warriors in the raider decide to get out and move towards my objective. The fleeing warrior goes off the board.
Shooting results in a a few dead guardians.
We roll for a turn 6 and it continues.
Turn 6:
Eldar: My avengers consolidate on his objective. My guardians pull as far back as they can go without leaving range of my objective. My only goal is to take out the last warrior squad that can contest/capture the objective. All my shooting sucks, killing only two warriors. They pass there leadership.
Dark Eldar:
He moves everything towards my objective. Since nothing will reach it, he hopes to shoot me off, hope that I flee, and hope we go to turn 7. He unloads on the guardians, with everything and the warlock and gunner are left and pass their leadership.
We roll for a turn 7 but the game ends.
I believe that if he got those warriors out of the immobilized raider on turn 4 instead of 5 then the game would have likely ended in a draw.
All in all, a great way to end the weekend and playing with 5th edition. Farewell 5th edition and let's hope 6th edition an enjoyable and fun rule set.
