pewter- Laquer thinner, 15-20 minutes plastic- pine sol, 6-8 hours Metal- Laquer thinner 15-20 minutes, brake fluid overnight. Pinesol too. WEAR GLOVES! Wash the models in soapy water before priming or the paint will never stick. Plastic- DO NOT USE PINESOL. It will soften some plastics. Use Simple Green by Castle, available in the automotive section at WallyWorld, like my boy said. Soak overnight about 8 hours, use a toothbrush to help get into the detail of the models. It will make a mess, but works well.

Thanks for all the responses, I used paint thinner on metal models with the plastic parts removed and Simple Green over night on the plastic ones. Tooth brush and Que-tips also with Testors paint thin at the end with a quick brush & clean. I shall now wash them off as instructed by Major S.O.B.
