Looked through the main book and didn' t see any clarification as to whether there is a maximum size base for characters. Is it the same ruling as in 40k that you can go with a larger base but no smaller than the base provided in the package. I'm talking about going from a 20x20mm to a 25x25mm. Other than ranking issues do you guys see any problems with it?

Currently there isnt a concrete rule on base sizes for characters, unless its mentioned in the army book (Slanns, etc.).
The standard is usually whatever came in the package is what you should go by, or the same as the equivilent RnF equal (orc, goblin, mounted model). That said, I have seen diaramic character bases and larger stuff in GTs so i suppose it's allowed.
Gameplay wise, you generally want the smallest base you can due to less enemy models in BtB contact with you. The only way I recall where bigger base is better is the Chaos magic weapon Berzerker Sword, where you gain extra attacks for ever 2 models in BtB with the wielder. Putting a Chaos Lord on foot with this weapon on a 50x50mm base probably will earn you a nice low sports score! ;D
