All armies are easy to start with. Some are just more models, like Infantry Companys, in particular Russians. I would not reccomend that to a starter.
Here is a list of Powers you can play;
Germany, Russia, USA, Britian, Italy
we currently have 3 german players: Me, Eric (jason has both american and German) 2 american: John (jason has both american and German) 1 1/2 British: Eric and C4 1 Italian: Boldo 1 Russian: Orville
A Tank company would be the cheapest to start with, I know money may be a factor for you. Germans have the most expensive tanks POINTS wise. So German Tank company is the smallest, cheapest, easiest to start with. Thats not to say that they are easy to play with. Not forgiving to many losses.
If you want a mix of tanks/infantry go Mobile Armored Infantry (What Eric plays) More models, more flexability
If you want to play infantry with support from Big guns, artilery, some tanks, play an infantry company. More models, lots of flexability, very forgiving when it comes to losses.
Also in the respective books there are other contries, like in the british one you can play canadians, aulstrailains, Germans you can play with the Finnish, Romainians and Hungarians (coming out soon)
There are also some unique companys to certain countries. Germany and America has Airborne companys (that actually use planes) Germany has a Pioneer company, america has Rangers.
My Recomendation, pick a country you think you would have fun with, purchase a book look at it. then decide what type of company you would like to play. Between everyone that plays we have all the books available. Nice thing is in the future all the books are going to be combines into two books, the Axis and The Allies.

here is the link to the PDF of the Finnish Army: www.battlefront.co.nz/documents/Finnish.pdfIts mid war 1943, its designed for the 2nd edition of FOW and not tournament legal until 2nd edition release in July/august. But I dont see why you can use it for fun until then?

Yeah, Canadians really caught my interest until I figured out they were really more expensive, weaker versions of Americans with access to slow British armor!!! But then again, you do get vehicles called otters...... ;D

Your kidding right? Canadians get an extra 250 pts at a 1500 pt game. The Churchill is an awesome albiet slow tank. Front and side armor of 8 and 7 respectively. Plus top armor of 2 will alow it to plow through infantry. Canadians like Germans never worry about losing platoon command because if they die you can replace them with another team. Doesn't seem so bad to me. Maybe I'll make my British army Canadian. Yeah,, eh, EH! I need to go get another Labatts eh, ya hoser! ;D

Well, remember I did look at them before getting a few games under my belt - all I had to compare with was my americans - confident/trained, american armor.
Churchills - bah. Slow tanks are death-traps, baby! Fear the Stuarts! I need another 5 or so.....
