The other sunday night group had its first session.
Ben, Mike, Specail Gina and I took out some old characters.
Here is what happened so far.
Jack Drakken convinced his old friend Magnus to head back to Longbridge with him to help track down the truth of what had happened to his long lost father. They had been friends back when Jack first swinging a scimitar for money and profit.
Longbridge was a hunting town in the Daggard mountains. It sat in the lowlands of firestorm peak. A peak made famous for the large impenetrable glass gates on the side of the mountain and for the fact the peak lit itself ablaze about every two decades. There were rumors that behind the gates was great wealth to be had and Magnus was not one to pass up a search for great wealth.
Magnus enlisted the aid of Brother Devon a devoted priest of the sea god, and Nylestra a elf wizard who had been introduced to him by his old friend Lazurlous Anderson. A warrior, a wizard a priest and a dungeon delver sounded like a good combination to Magnus. And the four made their way from the port city of kalaman to Longbridge.
Once at long bridge the town lived up to the reputation of the haunted province of Nightlund. The town gallows had signs of over use including four fresh bodies who had been put to death after maniacal rages. (Magnus found nothing valuable left in their pockets.) Worse yet the normally timid wildlife had developed a vicious streak. The four had been attacked by crazed elk along the way. Nylestra had checked with the local sheriff and such problems had only been getting worse.
Jack had wanted to go up to check out the gates, Devon concurred. The gates opened at about this time and would only be open for 28 days. The four paid for a common room and a guide to the gates. Unfortunately there was little in the way of places to trade or restock supplies so there was none of the last minute equipment purchases. There was only rest and a ten mile trip up the mountain.
Arriving at the gates at about 7 hours up the side of the mountain. The group arrived at 6:00 in the evening. They were dropped off in front of the glass gates structures. According to Nylestra the gates were covered in some magic runes of closing and locking. Nylestra started to draw some of the runes for later study when what appeared to be a rabid bear came out of the woods while she and Brother Devon had been distracted by the door and were unready.
Magnus however was ready. His short bow had already fired six times before Jack Dracken hacked the beast dead with his scimitar. The bear had slime all over him and pucker marks across bare patches of his skin. Something had gotten to the beast first. Something unnatural.
It was then that a great read tear appeared in the sky and a pillar of fire descended from it lighting the peak above the group ablaze. The Ancient glass doors swung open by their own power revealing a path to the darkness within.
The Chamber within was 20ft tall and 20 ft wide receding into the darkness where some sort of wall on the far end could be made out. The floor and nearby walls were perfectly smooth and crafted by expert hands.
Nylestra cast a light spell on the wooden shield of Jack Dracken. Causing it to immolate in harmless silver flames. A area about 20ft around was illuminated by a dim glow. The group entered the chamber cautiously and in single file. Brother Devon waited by the gates guarding the rear.
Magnus took the lead seeing nothing alarming before him. It was then that he felt his boot pierced by something from below. With a light foot he stepped back and inspected what could only be defined as a invisible caltrop. Magnus took the time to search out more crawling on the ground to ensure a path was ok for the others. When satisfied he summoned the rest to continue forward. (except Devon).
There was a wall on front of them of rough hewn stone. It was only ten foot tall and a set of spikes made of some sort of glass pointed down near the top of the wall. Magnus was sure he could climb it. Magnus pondered the odd wall. It didn’t match the other walls and it wasn’t tall enough.
Borrowing Jack’s shield Nylestra cast a spell causing her to float up the side of the wall. She had a coil of rope over her shoulder and after taking a look over the wall was going to lower it down to Jack. Magnus gave her the thumbs up as she started up the side of the wall.
When Nylestra reached the top of the wall and steadied herself to lower a rope she signaled down to Jack who could only gasp in horror as four giants wielding a 3 pointed pole arm (ranseur) leaned over the wall from a well defended position and began to attack the group. Both Magnus and Nylestra took hard hits and Jack was in no position to make any sort of counter attack.
Magnus took a hit to the arm and another to the leg before he could retreat to a position where he could start to fire with his short bow. A few of his arrows hit their mark on the nearest giant who bleeding badly bucked back down behind the wall out of site. “Invisible giants?!?,” Magnus mumbled. “This could be bad.”
Nylestra was in a far worse position. She could not escape without exposing herself to far to many attacks. Summoning the words of magic that she had taken so much of the morning committing to memory she let loose a spark from her delicate fingertips. That spark streaked about 25 ft away between two of the giants. Then a explosion of flame consumed the giants and left the wizardess a little drained as the magic escaped her.
The last of the giants heaved his pole arm at the elf wizardess and would have skewered her if it was not for a shield of magical force that Nylestra summoned to protect her just before the weapon struck. Summonig the words of magic afain a second explosion of flame consumed the last of the giants. Hurt but still spirited the elf announced “Looks clear.”
