), SM player from Binghamton
Game 1 was vs Ron's Deathwing on Chris's new "Pine Tree of No LOS" board, which I thought was awesome. It was a fun game (and possibly the first time I've ever played against Ron).
The LOL moment was the last round of hand to hand. He had two power fist terminators contesting an objective in H2H against my plague marines. He had been steadily killing one or two a round for the past couple rounds, but on the last round he whiffed with his terminators and I scored one with with my power fist champion. He lost combat by one and then rolled a one for his combat resolution armor save. My Plague Marines consolidated onto the objective.
On the other side of the board at the exact same time, I had a Greater Daemon with 3 wounds remaining and a couple lesser daemons vs. Belial and his squad of Terminator pain. My Greater Daemon struck well but Ron made the invulnerable saves. He then killed all the lesser daemons and I had to take 4 armor saves on the greater daemon for combat resolution. I failed three and he consolidated onto the objective.
I ended up with the win with one extra objective.
Game 2 was vs Paul and his Grey Knights/Sisters/Inquistor/Stormtroopers. The board was another new Chris creation with large, sealed bunkers that were impassable and blocked most LOS. Another cool board and another great game.
I mostly got lucky in this game - Paul forgot one key smoke launch that left his immolator open to combined lascannon fire. His Grey Knight terminators got hurt bad when their psycannons turned out to be ineffective against cover saves from turbo-boosting bikes. His Grand Master traded death blows with my Slaanesh daemon prince, which left him without a big hammer on one side of the board. There were only a couple shooting lanes and my obliterators and noisemarines were taking full advantage of them. Having one large terrain piece in the center gave my H2H units ample cover to approach. Even with having an advantage in that Paul hadn't played many games with Dawn of War deployment, I couldn't overcome the Imperial might and the game ended in a tie.
Game 3 was vs Jay and his Sisters/Inducted Guard/Grey Knights. It was a city-style board. We played the roads as roads, adding to the mobility of our tanks. The deployment was Spearhead and the Capture and Control objectives were in the center of the 2 unused table quarters.
Right off the bat, Jay's Exorcists had me pretty scared. I lost 2 dreadnoughts to them immediately. Jay quickly brought a land raider full of gray knights over to claim the objective on my side of the board. I had kept much of my brute force in reserve and surprised Jay when they walked on along the long board edge right next to his land raider (which seems to be a little-known option in the Spearhead deployment). Although the land raider eventually succumbed, it kept my oblits busy for most of the game. His Grey Knights lead by a cannoness destroyed a rhino and assaulted the marine squad inside along with my daemon prince. Eventually my nurgle daemon prince also hopped on from that side of the board and joined the fight. It came down to his cannonness vs both daemon princes. With her 2+ save made invulnerable using faith points, she probably would have held them there for a while. But, she failed her faith point leadership check and the 2 daemon princes made quick work of her (which we both agreed was game-changing). Another squad of sisters in a rhino arrived, but they were no match for the combined might of 2 oblits, a daemon prince and a squad of plague marines and I was able to claim that objective.
In the other corner, 2 sisters squads and a bunch of suppressive fire battled it out against a dreadnought, a greatly-reduced noise marine squad, and a CSM squad. Things were going Jay's way until I was reinforced with the arrival of my greater daemon and a squad of lesser daemons. They pushed through and took the objective on that side as well.
Although the game could have ended at a tie with 10 minutes left, we decided to play one more round to see what would happen. I was able to claim the objectives and get 2 more KPs then jay and ended up with the win.
Overall, the tournament was a lot of fun. I learned a couple things - among them that smoke launchers get used in the movement phase now, which is weird to me. Chris ran the tournament very well. The boards look awesome and will be great for the Da Boyz GT.
It looks like Shaun and I will be going to round 2 at Phoenix Games in Ontario on August 8th. Wish me Luck. Shaun doesn't need any
