I've been reading a lot of the postings on DaBoyz forum of late and in a few instances I've added my voice to the choir. However, there have been a number of threads that I would have enjoyed commenting on, but not being a member of the club, hesistate to because I don't feel I have the right.
Which got me thinking...which is always a dangerous thing...
So, how exactly does one go about becoming a member of this ancient, legendary, refined, and elegant society? This may be a foolish question, but I have been known to be a fool more often than not.

To be a DaBoy you have to be “good” person. We do not have strict guild lines. I guess if you are a person I would go and hang at a bar with then you would be part DaBoyz. I, myself was not even one of the original founding members. It was really three guys Shaun Kemp, Eric Hobin and another guy that does not play anymore. We used to have a good storey on how the DaBoyz came about. I think it got lost. It was written by Jon Sam (a lot of people have never heard of that name). Really the DaBoyz are group of friends that come out of gaming. For example Shaun was best man in my wedding. I can’t remember the last time I played Shaun, but we talk a couple of times a week.
If we have enough interest we can put another in for shirts. The last shirt I had was left over from the last order and I give it to Zack (Krusty) because I thought he is a good person (even if he does look like a character). I would even go as far saying I would let him date my sister or brother, whatever his preference in that short of thing.
The minimum order is 12 and the shirts cost around $20. The more shirts the cheaper the costs.
And just a note on the group; most of group will typically do not post on the forums, but they still have there own opinions. It was the there were more discussions about the game in general. What about 8th edition fantasy. What are people thought on games day and the games day miniature? How do people fell about the new Daemon models? The game is a lot bigger then our local area. If anyone wants to vent and this is not place to do it, I would recommend starting a blog. Chumbalaya has and I think it is great.

Zach? OMG that kid....I mean look at the kid, he has more holes in his head than swiss cheese.
As said above there is no set of rules of who is a Daboyz. Think of it as a social thing. Just cool people who hang out together. People like Kemp who helped me out when my car got smashed and loaned me the money to get it fixed. Or People like Courtney who would give me rides to tournaments when I had no means to get there. Or Jay giving me models and bits for nothing. I think the reason why we all get together so well (for the most part) is we have the same mentality and comradery (sp?).
On a side note there was a humorous list of rules we had a while ago that you must do before you truely become one of DaBoyz. It was purely for fun but it was like Rule #1: You MUST use soap #2: Must place in the top 5 in a tournment of 20 players #3: Go out and Drink with us #4 Go with us to an away/out of town torunament.
Oh and other things like, If you lost to an out of towner (non daboyz) at a tournement you had to do 2D6 push ups
And a standard bet was "A box of Guardians"
Trash talk is a must during a game especially when you cant back it up.
Theres other stuff im sure im missing. Over all we are just about fun or making fun of people. Right Doug!?

Okay, the essence of this thread is exactly why I spend an entire year painting and fretting over an army, get up at an ungodly hour in the morning, two days in a row, drive to Rochester freaking out about getting lost in traffic all the way to play at your GT. It's the comraderie I see here. I often get worried by some of the angry rants I see on the forums, but that's mainingly because I don't really know you folks. I'm guessing that most of it is not mean-spirited, but good-hearted. I may never become one of DaBoyz (I don't know that I'm a good enough person), but I think I will hang out here a bit more often.
Oh, and if you're putting in an order for t-shirts I'll certainly buy one. But not a red one because I'm no judge.
Thanks folks!

This was a good question and which has been answered by both Jay and Ron. I want to add my two cents as well..
DaBoyz means absolutely nothing or could mean everything depending on your perspective. Like it has been said there are no stringent guidelines or frat-like initiation but when you see someone wearing one of our shirts understand it means alot to that person.
DaBoyz started out with a bunch of guys who got together and started playing 40K. The original members would describe themselves as drinkers with a gaming problem. These original members are known for the ability to play as well as their ability to build fun and competitive armies. Some of DaBoyz excelling in painting as well. Some of them excel in their game time antics of which their are more then one legendary stories that are commonly told. While 40K may be the initial thing that drew these guys together, it is probably the least of the reasons that the friendships have remained. Some of the most important parts of being a member of DaBoyz has absolutely nothing to do with playing. I can tell you of a member who loaned money to another to fix his car while the until the insurance check arrived. I can tell you of a day spent reroofing a porch, or a day spent moving a family into their new house, or painting a new office, and I can tell you stories of cooking out on a front porch of another members house. I can tell you about congraduating guys on their children's births and marriages, and being their to listen and help when needed. I can tell you of days spent teaching new players the game or how to paint. I can also tell you how proud I felt when I knew one of our members became an ROTC officer and recently watching two of our members graduate high school. The list goes on and on. These are the important things that make up the members of DaBoyz, not the painted models that we play with.
As for the tournament, DaBoyz GT was envisioned by some of the original members as way to "give back to the community and grow the next generation of players". We run this tournament for YOU. While it is true we run it "our way", we also go to great lengths to make sure that the people attending will have a good time and will go home with some nice prizes. None of us get paid for this, most of us lose money, time, vacation days from work, and sleep gearing up for this event. All we ask for is a little help in return and for you to show up and try to enjoy yourself. This tournament is built around the aspect of this game that we collectively feel is fun and worth promoting, and that is why you often see us defend our views so voraciously.
In a conversation I had recently with one member we both laughed about being characterized as "a bunch of grumpy old men". We both laughed cause we agreed we both are, but if you take the time to open your eyes you will see we are alot more. We are fathers, husbands, good friends, hard workers and upstanding citizens as well as occasional idiots that sometime take our game of toy soldiers too seriously. So do you still want to join? If so the next words our of your mouth should be as follows..."OK you a--holes, how can I help?"

OK you a-- holes, how can I help? Though to be honest, I would prefer to say: "Right, what needs to be done?" and get to it. As I believe my friend Rotnak will attest, I too can be classed as a cranky old man (I'm 48) who will often take playing with little army guys way too seriously. I'm afraid I really don't drink much any more (never was a big drinker even in my heyday). As to other credentials, I could send you a resume and demo reel but I'd rather demonstrate by doing. So, I think what I'll do is just pitch in wherever I can help. I figure if I'm ever deemed worthy enough, you folks will invite me - until then I won't worry about it. Oh, and Dragon, I do tarot readings. Thanks folks - see you all in the funny pages! -Scott

Well lets face it. Zack and I are not drinking, and not planning on any time soon, but we I guess are considered "DaBoyz." A personal choice wouldn't bar you from being a part of our group.
