Going to play devil advocate here,
While everyone has thier opinion and its best to go on what fun for you and what will you want to play in the end. It still is a good idea to ask and see how the target gaming area plays and thinks about certain builds.
Its hard to know whats good unless you try it and generally unless you buy it or borrow it you wont know. My opinion, buy the basicis, then get what ever appeals to your liking. Play with that for a few games, find out what works and doesnt work for you. Then you can pick and choose what units to get next.
There is nothing wrong with asking for advice, people are usaully more than willing to give it, as seen above. Good luck in your gaming and hope to see you around Boldos or Millenium.

I'll just add to what IW said. The other big advantage to asking for advice is that you might see something you've never thought of. Even if you choose to not use it, it's something to think about.
But, you are also right in that asking for advice will often get you contradictory suggestions. You really need to develop your own style first so you know what appeals to you best. Plus, you need some experience under your belt since some of the things you think you know may prove to be less than accurate once you play more. And once again, even this can depend on your play style.

True enough, I'll just have to begin the arduous task of gathering my above and final revised army list, though I may remove the speeders for something else, maybe a squad of assault marines to protect the tactical squads.

Wait a second, can you buy a land raider for terminators as a transport without using a heavy slot?

Yes. you purchase it as a dedicated transport. The terminators and the land raider use 1 Elite slot.
