Well what I can say is we started the WARFAN club in Georgia as a "hobby" club. We were big into the painting, terrain, and fluff side as well as gaming. We had fun and were very successful.
Eventually another gaming club that was more focused on meta game and winning eventually collapsed. The remnants joined our club and pretty much took it over. Now that great "hobby" club is pretty much dead. The power gamers blew everyone out and getting new blood in the group is very difficult because nobody teaches them anything...except how to lose.
From Experience I can say that if you only concentrate on one aspect of this hobby you can not maintain or grow a group. That is why I am such a strong proponent of all aspects of the hobby and why you don't see me playing in the tourny's where paint and such do not count.

I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive.
I play to win. To deny that would be silly. If I spent so much money and so much time painting and lost every game, I'd prolly quit.
However, I enjoy painting, converting, and building terrain also. I spend more time in the Dakka P&M forums than any other drooling over conversions and paint schemes. I have my next two armies planned out for whenver the funds become available, chosen because of their appearance and fluff and having nothing to do with their codex. I have more designs for tables and terrain than I could hope to finish in a year. I'd even like to think my personal tables will be on par with Courtney and Jay's soon.

What Aaron said. There shouldn't be a divide, we're all hobbyists here, we all enjoy the same game. It's a small community, no need to be divisive.

As an outsider, I don't really see a huge division in DaBoyz. Yes, there is considerable discussion on the topic - BUT - you folks are very open about it. Reading between the lines, it sounds like that other gaming club has an enormous amount of back-biting, whispering, and rumor-mongering going on. In other words, I think they have much deeper problems than just the debate between hobbyists and powergamers that need to be addressed.
Just my two cents - I could be completely wrong. ;D
