That's true. They have a hate-on for SCs, so not much you can do there. You can always use a Lord Commissar, but it's just not as cool.
All those duplicate infantry squads will get your comp score dinged too. I don't think basic infantry running around with just meltas are particularly effective anyway, taking some Vets in a Chimera gets you a much more effective melta delivery system. For the infantry, are heavy weapons on the table? 20-30 guardsmen with attached Commissar and autocannons or lascannons is a nice fire base and can effectively protect your tanks with bubble wrap.
Bolt pistols are bleh, basically wasted points.
Multi-melta sponsons on a Vanquisher is overkill. You want it to keep moving anyway to set up better shots.
Punisher could actually use sponsons, since all it does is torrent anyway.
Heavy Flamers are a good pick for hull weapons on your Exec and Punisher; they're a great deterrent to assaulters.
Your CCS has BS4, no point in wasting it. A simple autocannon or even some Grenade Launchers or Plasma Guns would be handy. A Regimental Standard is also a good pick up if you have lots of bodies running around.

If you want comp scoring advice email your list to daboyzgt2010@gmail.com by tomorrow, you will get a estimate of your comp score and suggestions how to increase your comp.
chumbalaya my be a good person to help with list building but he isn't some one you should get advice on comp as he doesn't understand how the comp works.
@ chumbalaya just so you know and don't continue spout incorrect info. Last year in the servery one of the biggest complaints was the use of special characters. So as a whole we tried to address this issue as best we could. Some of the counsel wanted to completely ban them but it was decided to allow one special character but it would hurt your comp score. SO that is why we have addressed it as such not because we "..a hate-on SC..".

Well, that is a hate-on, no? SCs are as much a part of the game now as any other legal unit in the Codex. You might have had a case in 3rd or 4th when they were opponent's permission only and often actually broken, but now they're integral to all the 5th ed armies. You can't even play certain armies without one, like Deathwing or Ravenwing.
I can understand people not liking individual SCs, namely the usual suspects (Vulkan, Ghaz, Njal, and so on), but guys like Yarrick, Lukas, Farsight and Zogwort are very characterful, unique and fun. It would be like giving blanket penalties to all Bikes, regardless of their effectiveness within Codices or individual armies.
Patrick's army is very compy. He has no Vets, no Demolishers, no Flyers, loads of fluffy wargear, and the most expensive HQ model Guard can field. Why would anybody get in a huff over Yarrick in such an army? Rambo, Creed and Straken are all infinitely better; Yarrick is just fun.
It just doesn't make any sense, to be perfectly honest.

Let's start this out by saying that I was one of the people that told Patrick about Yarrick and the impact that playing him or any other SC in the GT will have on his score. If you have a question as to what was said you can start by addressing me.
No one ever said Patrick wasnt playing a fluffy or balanced list but he asked for an opinion on what he was playing and it was given. He was told playing Yarrick and two Executioners would have a negative impact on his score. Patrick is a smart kid and alot of fun to play. He made the decision to change out an Executioner for a Punisher to help his score but seems to be still leaning toward playing Yarrick because he likes him. These are all valid choices and entirely up to him. He may be young but he gets it and plays this game to have fun. Some of the more prolific posters here could learn a thing or two from him. He is playing guard because he read a Black Library book on Tanith and Gaunt's Ghosts and liked what he read. All he is asking is how to get a decent score in comp, not how he can metagame himself to a win or play a "fluffy bunny list" and become the next "Kool Aid King". ( Are these metaphors used correctly Jer and Aaron? Next time you want to insult someone like you did in your emo-encrusted blogs have the consistency to be as equally insulting in person!)
Bottom line is - Patrick, you should play what you like and continue to have fun doing so. Last I checked this was a game and a hobby, nothing more. Ignore all the BS you see here and on the rest of the net about what is best, blah, blah, blah, and keep having fun. That my young friend is the only reason you should play.
-Rant off

Bottom line is - Patrick, you should play what you like and continue to have fun doing so.-Rant off I think everyone here plays the game to have fun. I doubt someone would spend $700+ and 160 hours painting an army if they didn't have fun with it. Your advice is conflicted as usual, which is where the fun-killing comes into play. Playing what you like is not always accepted in our locale because of the conflict with the comp environment. What if Patrick likes playing with Yarrick and two executioners. Based on those choices alone, he cannot receive more than a 70/120 comp score so yes he can play with what he likes but there goes 50 points and a full games worth in the GT. Jer enjoys playing Logan Wing space wolves, but he is ridiculed for playing what he likes here, despite placing 6/96 in an out of town tourney with it. I have never played my dream list because I don't want to be ridiculed like that. I'm the only person here who has played every single Millennium and Boldos monthly tournament since March. I haven't brought a special character once or duplicated a single codex selection except for two Mawlocs I brought for the March tourney. Comp hurts Tyranids more than most armies in our mechanized era. I played a "comp" marine list with 7 vehicles a couple weeks back, but I only have two reliable anti-vehicle shooting selections and I don't play dupes because of the comp environment. You could even say I don't "play what I like" because of the words and actions of many in the club. I can't speak for Jer, but I created my blog because I was tired of the drama here and I didn't want it to dominate the forums anymore. I haven't even mentioned the comp subject in months and avoided it on purpose. I want the GT to be a successful, positive experience and have even defended it on other online forums despite my personal issues with the format and scoring. Despite all this, you continue to call us out and ridicule us. So I'm going to counter your advice to Patrick. Don't play what you like, play what they tell you to. If you like playing with 6 chimeras, 3 executioners, and yarrick, don't do it. They will call you names, insult your generalship skill, and be poor sports during the games. I've seen it in person and Jer documented it in his blog.

uhh, i didnt mean to start an argument or anything, but i dont want to get the reputation about running a bad list and being the cheesy person, but if i try to go with a compy army, i might not win a game. let me rewrite my army list...
