After a game this weekend I ran into two rules questions that I thought would be worth bringing up here. The first is:
A soul grinder (SG) assaults a mob of boys with a Weirdboy attached to it. The SG elects to split its 5 attacks to put two on the Weirdboy (who is in b2b with the SG) and 3 on the boyz mob. The question is - are models allowed to split their attacks between two different units. Here are the relevant rules from the BRB:
pg 41 - Multiple combats
"Combats that involve more than two units are called 'multiple combats' "
This combat involved a SG, Boys and Weirdboy, it is a multiple combat because...
pg 49 - Independent Characters & Assaults
"When attacks are resolved, however, independent characters are always treated as a separate single-model unit (as described under Multiple Combats on page 41)."
Finally, when it comes to attacks the Multiple Combats section on pg 41 says in the second bullet:
"Models that were engaged with more than one enemy unit at the beginning of the combat (before any model attacks) may split their attacks freely"
This seems to suggest the SG can split its attacks, however, there was some disagreement in the game, so what is your opinion?
The second question also has to do with multiple assaults. I have heard it stated at different times that you need to declare all units you plan to assault at the start of the assault phase. For example, a squad of SM wishes to charge both a Boyz and Warbikers mob. The relevant steps for assault moves seems to be on pg 34 'Assaulting Multiple Units'
"The remaining models can assault models belonging to other enemy units as long as they keep following the rules for moving assaulting models"
with the caveat "remember that the assaulting unit is not allowed to break coherency"
This suggests to me that you only declare an assault against a single unit and then can move into as many models in other units as you like provided you ascribe to the rules for 'Moving Assaulting Models' on pg 34. Agreement/disagreement and did I miss anything?
