I decided to go off on a tangent and do some test bases to break up the painting monotony. Here's a clawed fiend beast (counts as). Not fully finished yet with eyes and such, but you get the idea... LMKWYT

Nice job on the painting and base. I like the city rubble look and i see some of the GW building pieces in there. I did the same thing with my son's scourges.

Thanks Kevin.
Joe - It's the new fantasy vargheist/crypt fiend kit. I'm using the vargheists for razorwings and the crypt fiend as a clawed fiend.

The rubble looks good, but I wish there was a pop of color on it. It seems so drab compared to the rest of the model - maybe an ice blue to really make the purple pop on the model?

There's actually a little color in the dead grass. The original pic is from a bad angle. The recesses are also washed with dark brown and the highlights on the base are mixed with tapioca which has a warm hue. The camera doesn't properly capture the feel, but I see what you mean with the overall look. I was going for something like you see in photos of blasted french cities after ww2. I guess I was looking at too many black and white photos hehe.

I think the contrast is perfect. The brighter colors on the model should not compete with the base. I think the basing makes you concentrate on the model and think "nice base" rather than look at the base and think "nice model".
My DE are darker so I am using lighter bases to keep the models from looking too drab....I promise you Aaron one day I will get pics hehe. I have all the Wracks done now. Working on the Kymeria next.

Thanks Joe, that's what I was thinking. The army itself uses every color of the rainbow (my FU to 3 color min) so I figured too much color on the bases might make them overwhelming as a whole. Here's an example. Yellow, orange, red, purple, and black on the armor. Blue gems and eyes. Weapon gems will be color coded to the weapon type, so this one has green for poison/splinter.

They way I have heard the three color concept is that you should only have three major colors. Minor colors and accents don's count. So, your FU isn't quite the FU when viewed in that way.
BTW, I think the army is gorgeous. Hoping when I get around to leaning to airbrush I can pull of something like this. Planning to do my Fantasy Dark elves with air brush when I get around to it.

Thanks Gabe. I've been thinking about doing an airbrush demo/class as I think a couple people are interested. Maybe the first tuesday after easter, 4/10 if that works for anyone.

I'm interested. Will depend on how my mouth feels. I have oral surgery the day before. Also, you might be competing with the Malifaux league.

My understanding of the 3 color concept from the old regional guy in the SE (and he had been with GW for a while before they got rid of all the good people) was that it was a 3 color minimum PER COLOR as everyone was layering paint. It is one reason I developed the paint style I have today but I usually use 5 colors per color.
Ironically if you look at the upcoming paint range it is 3 colors per color (base, color, highlight) but with the addition of washes.
