Played my first game of 6th edition over the weekend. Question came up that I wasn't able to find and answer too at the time;
Q: I have a unit of x20 guardsman that are firing at a unit that is 10' away. x10 of the x20 guardsman are withing rapid fire range (12') and x10 are not for a total of 30 shots. Do the x10 that are within 12' of the enemy have to roll there hits and wounds separately because only a finite number of casualties are in range or do they all just get lumped together?
*We were thinking separately mainly because we had a plasmagun in the above squad with only 1 model within 12'.

You roll them all together in a lump sum as they are the same unit. The only time any wounds would be dropped off is if you kill everything in the squad you are shooting except for a guy or two behind a wall that no one in your unit can see.

top of pg 16.
"As long as a model was in range of the enemy when to hit rolls were made, he is considered to be in range for the duration of the shooting attack, even if the removal of casualties means that the closest model now lies out of range."
Even if the back rank is only in range of the front rank, you can pull casualties from the max range of the closest model since everyone who pulled the trigger was in range at one point.

Thanks for the responses! With the edition and current FAQ changes, the Tau seem to have gotten a power bump. It was interesting having my piranha have a 2+ cover save when going flat out and more than 12' away from the shot.
