The winter league has started this week and I plan on using the league as a springboard to test out and get a feel for the new chaos codex. My goal is to run my Chaos army throughout the year at the Millennium events and one-off games to get my army to the point where, hopefully, I will feel confident running them at the Da Boyz GT this coming fall. The league will give me a chance to try out new units, experiment with what works and what doesn't with my play style. However, I am also planning on setting limitations for myself that include:
1) I will only run fully painted units during all of my games.
2) No spamming of units other than basic Chaos Space Marine troop choices and Rhinos. (so no 9 man oblits, 3 hell drakes, etc...)
3) I will attempt to try different builds throughout the year. So some games may see raptors, others see bikers, and I will also try running allied lists with Chaos daemons (and if I am ambitious enough, traitor imperial guard allies.)
4) I will attempt to play all my lists as a Word Bearers Host, meaning that they will not be dedicated to one chaos god. So for example while I may apply a Mark of Nurgle to one unit, I will not mark another unit with the Mark of Nurgle unit I have placed a Mark of Tzeench, Khorne, or Slannesh on other units. The same goes for lists where I plan on running daemon allies.
My lists during the winter league will follow the exploits of Dark Apostle Sorac, leader of the 231st Host of the Word Bearers legion. When the Dark Apostle is not on the field, his Coryphaus, Kol Holak will be commanding the host in his place as the War Lord. I plan to document these games as they happen so that I can learn from each experience and hopefully entertain you folks along the way. I like to add narration to my reports to make it a bit more interesting but we will see how it goes over time. Let me know what you all think.
The format of the first two weeks of the league is to cap the points to 1000 pts and no allies are allowed. Other than that the type of games and missions are up to the two players to decide. After the first two weeks, all gloves are off and you can play any point sized game, any mission, or format.
My first game of the league was against Zack and his Deathwing list.
My 1000pt list
Chaos Lord - Black Mace, Mark of Tzeentch, Gift of Mutation
Hellbrute - Power Scourge
10 CSM - Asp with Powerfist, Veterans of the long war, 2x plasma guns
10 CSM - Asp with Powerfist, Veterans of the long war, plasma gun, melta gun
6 Havocs - Asp, 3 x autocannons, 1 missile launcher
3 Obliterators
Zack ran something like
Belial
6 Assault Terminators (Thunder hammers, lightning claws)
5-6 Terminators (Autocannons)
Dreadnaught with TL Las and Autocannons
Landraider with Las, Autocannons, heavy bolters
The battle for the hive city was nearly won. The Imperial guard defense forces were being slaughtered by the hundreds of thousands and the remnants should have been weeded out nearly two days ago but reports from the front lines indicated that a detachment of space marines was providing to be a thorn in Dark Apostle Sorac's plans. The remaining populace of the hive city had been enslaved and forced to working on converting the ecclesiarch spire into a debased monument to chaos that would soon open a warp rift of immense size above the planet and summon forth a daemonic hoard that would run unchecked in the sector. But the resilience of the marines was something unforeseen. He could not let them stop his plans of the great summoning so Dark Apostle Sorac ordered his Coryphaus, Kol Holak, to lead a detachment of the 231st Host into the ruins and hunt down the remnants. Unbeknown to the Dark Apostle, the remnants were none other that the 1st company of Dark Angels known as the Deathwing...
Mission: Purge the Alien
Deployment: Vanguard
My warlord trait was Flames of Spite, which gives my warlord and any unit he joins melee weapons the soul blaze special rule.
Zack won the roll off for sides and choose the corner to his right. We used the terrain formation that was already setup from a previous game.
We rolled to see who deploys first and Zack won. He deploys the land raider and dreadnought behind some 4+ ruins close to my short end of the triangle
Belial and Assault terminators go into the land raider and the auto cannon terminators go into reserve to auto come in on turn 1 via deepstrike.
I line up my obliterators and hellbrute as close as I can to the ruins with his land raider. To the left of them I stretch out the 2 plasma gun squad to act as a meat shield. The second squad and lord go behind the first squad. The havocs deploy in some cover near the end of the right flank of the strung out squad.
My thoughts: Kill point mission against a Deathwing list... yeah, I wasn't going to win a shooting contest so I made the decision that I was going to rush the raider and try to pop it and then tie the units up inside with the hellbrute until the lord could get over there. I was hoping that where ever he deepstuck the second unit I would be able to pin them down with the havocs and let them and the obliterators whittle them down. I've played Zack many times over the years and he is a pretty tough opponent. I know this game will not be any different.
I attempt to seize but fail.
The sound of bolter fire had slackened off in the last hour or so. The occasional staccato of an auto cannon and lost communication from his forward scouts were the only indication to Kol Holak that the dark angels were still in the area. The coryphaus ordered the first squad toward the ruins across the street while he and the 2nd squad would follow up. He ordered the havocs to hold in some nearby debris and cover their advance. He knew better than to try and issue orders to the obliterator squad and hellbrute assigned to his detachment. Their minds had long ago given in to the blessed insanity of the warp and their only thoughts were to get in close and kill. So he opted to leave them to do what they do best and hopefully draw the enemy out for his squads to eliminate. Where were those d**ned curs?
Turn 1:
Out of nowhere, a squad of terminators materialized about 100 yards up from the 1st squad and movement from the building in front of them revealed that a Land Raider and dreadnought had been concealed in the ruins. He had walked into a trap... A couple of battle brother dropped as they were caught in the crossfire. Kol Holak knew that sitting out in the open or trying to take cover would only see more of them killed so he gave the order for all units to move up and engage the enemy...
Zack deepstikes the auto cannon terminators into a clear section of the board with unobstructed line of fire into all my units except for the havocs. I was thinking that he was going to drop them near my havocs or behind my lines to force me to split my army into two.
The land raider and auto cannon terminators shoots at the 1st squad and after a handful if incredible saves I only lose 2 CSMs.
Since my havocs are not in a position to see anything I move them up to draw a line of fire on the terminators. Everything else moves up a little towards the ruins with the land raider. The obliterators and chaos marines in squad 1 fire at the auto cannon terminators and take one down. Havocs run to get into a good firing position.
Zack KPs: 0
Kevin KPS: 0
Turn 2:
Kol Halok grinned as he saw the remnants of the 1st squad hold their ground and return fire. No legion was more dedicated to the cause of bringing down the false emperor and the inferior whelps than his Host. Suddenly, a deranged howl filtered through their vox network. The hellbrute's arm that housed its melta gun was shorn off by a searing blast from the land raider. Howling in pain and anger, the hellbrute lumbered off towards the raider. Kol Holak took the opportunity and ordered the rest of his squads to open fire on the terminators and he cackled manically as he saw all but 1 get cut down by the mass of fire directed at them. This would be easier than he thought....
Zack shuffles the dreadnought so that he can get a line on the obliterators and hellbrute. The land raider unloads on the hellbrute and strips off the multi melta and a hullpoint. The auto cannon terminators kill more chaos marines from squad 1.
In my movement phase I roll the crazed result and my hellbrute must move towards the unit that shot it, which was the land raider. This wasn't bad as it was what I wanted it to do anyway. My havocs, CSMs, and obliterators have some great shooting and combined they kill all but 1 terminator. Zack had some really bad saving rolls as most of those wounds came from hits that he had his AP2 saves. (So close to first blood). One of my plasma gunners in squad 1 rolled a gets hot and ended up failing his save.
Zack KPs: 0
Kevin KPS: 0
Turn 3:
What passed for a smile on Kol Holak’s mutilated and ritually scared face turned into a snarl as the remaining marines of his 1st squad were cut down by the blasted land raider and lone terminator. He ordered the havocs to finish off the terminator and the rest of his squad to advance toward the ruins with the land raider. As they advanced, the ground trembled and the nearby ruins shook as the land raider erupted into a swirling ball of flame. At least the obliterators had proven their worth. The Hellbrute, seeing the terminators pile out of the flaming wreckage, charges into the ruins to engage the marines and disembowels one of them before they strike back with their thunder hammers and lay him low....
Between the land raider and auto cannon terminator, Zack finishes off my meat shield squad and scores first blood. His dreadnought shoots at the obliterators but I make my saves.
The obliterators, hellbrute and the 2nd squad move up towards the ruins. The havocs finish off the last auto cannon terminator and the obliterator pops the land raider with their multi meltas. The Hellbrute charges in kills 1 assault terminator and then gets pasted.
Zack KPs: 2
Kevin KPS: 2
Turn 4:
All attention was on the hellbrute as he fell to the recently displaced terminators. A bright flash and then a cry of anger drew Kol Holaks attention over to the obliterators. One of their number had a gapping hole through its chest where a lascannon bolt had just passed through it. Seeing that they were distracted, the deathwing terminators barreled through the ruins to capitalize on the confusion to engage the obliterators. The obliterators, confused on who to shoot at, fired wildly over the heads of the terminators lumbering towards them. Kol Holak sees what he assumes must be their leader, detach from the terminators and scale the ruins. He orders his squad to move toward the lone marine while he moved towards the melee between the terminators and obliterators. As he advances he sees one of the obliterators punch a power fist through the chest of a marine before they are cut down in return by a series of blows from the marines. At least the obliterators saved some for him.....
Zack's terminators move up towards the obliterators thanks to a good bounce and move through terrain rolls. Surprisingly, he breaks Belial off from the terminators and moves him up on the second story of the ruins. The Dreadnought kills an obliterator with a lascannon shot.
The assault terminators charge my obliterators and over watch does nothing. My obliterators kill 1 terminator and then the remaining terminators kill the remaining obliterators.
I move my 2nd squad towards the ruins and break off my lord to head towards the terminators. Havocs fire on Belial and score a wound. 2nd squad fires on Belial and wound him as well, leaving him with one wound. (I can taste slay the warlord)
Zack KPs: 3
Kevin KPS: 2
Turn 5:
The havocs and word bearers from the 2nd squad appeared to have scored some hits on the captain, forcing him to seek cover. During the reprieve the remaining terminators advance onto the 2nd squad. 2nd squad cuts one down before they reach their lines. One of the terminators notices Mangar, the squad leader, and issues a challange. Mangar accepts and swiftly has his head shorn off from a well placed blow from a thunder hammer. Looks like 2nd squad needs a new leader Kol Halok thought as he rushed into the fray and strikes one of the terminators down with his black mace. Kol Holak gestures to his squad to lower their bolters. This last one is his...
Zack runs Belial to a section of the ruins where I cannot draw a line of sight. d**n! He also pulls the dreadnought back, taking a shot at my lord but he makes his invul save.
Zack assaults the 2nd squad and surprisingly I take one down one terminators with over watch, leaving only two terminators left. Zack declares a challenge with my aspiring champion, knowing that I must accept. The champion gets pasted but 2nd squad hangs in.
My havocs cannot see Belial and do not have range on the dreadnought so they sit still.
I run my Chaos lord into the combat and in the ensuing combat I kill a terminator, leaving 1 remaining.
Zack KPs: 3
Kevin KPS: 2
We roll and go onto turn 6
Turn 6:
Kol Holak raises his mace, ready to strike but the weapon momentarily rebels, almost as though it wants to taste his blood. Kol Holak, quite shaken, regains control and strikes down the last terminator. By this time the enemy dreadnought and captain fall back into the approaching darkness…
No shooting in 6 as the dreadnought could not see the havocs and the same for the havocs. In the assault I roll for my daemon weapon roll and get a 1. So I am striking at WS1. Despite that, the chaos lord ends up killing the last assault terminator.
Zack KPs: 3
Kevin KPS: 3
Nothing left to do, we roll for turn 7 but the game ends.
The swift and effective ambush of the Dark Angels had hurt his detachment but he had also inflicted a grave wound upon them by laying low the champions of the much vaunted deathwing. Taking in the scene, Kol Holak knows that the remaining Dark Angels will probably pull off of the planet, realizing that there was little hope in stopping the summoning. This sector is now truly lost to the imperium. As Kol Holak marched back toward his lines, he can hear the chants.... chants to Logar, chants to the dark gods! His blood rushed with excitement. Soon they would be moving on, defiling and claiming more worlds for the glory of Chaos!
Total points: Zack has 4pts to my 3pts. We tied on kill points but Zack had first blood. No one got line breaker or slay the warlord so the win goes to Zack.
Overall I can't complain as all the units performed as I intended. I was hoping that my hellbrute would have lasted one more turn but losing two hull points before getting into assault shortened his lifespan. I was thinking about adding either the MoN or MoT onto the obliterators to make them last longer but at 1k points you have to take what you can.
Zack played a stellar game and I do think that if his terminator saves were not so bad in the beginning that his auto cannon squad would have made light work of my 2nd squad and netted another kill point.
1) I will only run fully painted units during all of my games.
2) No spamming of units other than basic Chaos Space Marine troop choices and Rhinos. (so no 9 man oblits, 3 hell drakes, etc...)
