Im about 1/3 way through this excellent book (thanks for letting me borrow this book James) It takes place during the great crusade when the Imperium was spreading after the finding of the primarchs. The Luna Wolves (Black Legion now) are the main chapter that is followed. IM not going to get too much into the sotry to ruin the story but something I found intersting.
A reaccuring theme in the first 3rd of the book is about how the imperium will not acknowledge the exsitance of Sprits, Daemons or Gods (good or evil). There is no such thing. Its against Imperial creedo, The Astatres hate/pity those whom have been blinded/decieved by religion. The only thing in the imperium is Light, Gravity and Humanity. This is a stong belief amonst all of the imperium. Other beliefs are simply wrong.
An Offical in the book said: We are Right because They are Wrong. He goes into talking about those misguided by religion, spiritualism etc...There is no more religion, it was the cause of so many wars and strife in the Dark Period of Terra. After its abolishment humanity came out on top and began to excell. It unified the human society (with the emporers help) during the unification wars. Which the emporer pretty much said...Stop. Do this because the way your doing it is wrong. This is better, here is how you do it...ok now that you have progressed and I have shown you the error of your way/thoughts...join me or die. (i summed it up pretty much)
We know from looking at the fluff that there are Daemons and Gods and spirits. I think in this time of expantion and the great crusdade that the Imperium hasnt yet encountered them thats why thier creed is working so well. I think the truth that Horus sees (which may lead to him turning on the emporer) is that The Emporer had lied to him about such things like Daemons and Gods. These really do exist...the question arised now is why did the Emporer lie to Horus and the other primarchs? What else is he lying about? This may be Horus's thinking before he turns.
I hope this is explained in the latter part of the book. Imagine Millions of worlds taken over by the Imperium, told they are wrong in thier beliefs, reconditioned, retrained retought, then one day they find out...wait a minute we were right! Ouch.
