Has anyone ever found the mine field version of the Whirlwind to be useful? Thanks

yes, it's very useful - you should always arm them with minefield ammo - ALWAYS!!
What?!? Why are you looking at me like that?

What Brian is trying to say is that they can be very affective but need to be used by at least two whirlwinds to have any affect. Minefileds force the opponent to test when moving through them but your troops are unaffected. I made templetes from CDs, they are a bit smaller but work fine. I say give it a try Erik, but again, use at least two whirlies, one is not affective.

Ive hear this said before:
The things that the mines are good against like bugs and guard, The other shot is better because they have to move over the mine for the mines to work where the other shot you just have to hit them.

Eldar and Tau also are good with the mine fields since it prevents all that jumpy crap Tommy pulls as well as kills them outright when they trip a mine I believe (not 100% sure on this but I think the AP on the minefield is higher than Tau and Eldar, could someone check please).

Thanks Orville, did not have a codex here. Still useful to keep units from moving. Does it count as difficult terrain as well? Just wondering...

for 5pts a Tau vehicle may take "sensor spines". The vehicle then only triggers a mine on a roll of 6. Nobody does it, because nobody uses the w-wind minefield. So just don't let the Tau player know before the game and he probably won't take the sensor spines.

Not to mention mines only effect modes that move.
The biggest reason that Dougs mine fields were innefective vrs me in our game, was because as soon as i was in one i stood still and shot.
What was he gonna do. put a bigger mine field around me? (My Tau)
The mine fields are oviously more useful vrs some.
