Quick question:
The Space Marine Codex says I can buy grenades for my marines at +X points per unit. Do I have to buy grenades for everyone in that unit or can I just buy on a one by one basis?

Yup, whole unit. Only when it says 'you may arm up to 3 models with heavy weapons' or some such thing does it only apply to a specific number of models. Otherwise, you have arm all models in the unit the same (which I think is actually written somewhere in the main rulesbook - but I can't quote where).
think of it this way - if you only armed half of the unit with frag grenades you would have to figure some way of keeping track of which models have them and which don't. Can you imagine the hassle that will cause when you actually assault someone in cover and start taking casualties? - or if you took caualties before getting in hth? Nobody models frag grenades on their guys so how are you going to know which ones attack at the same initiative and which ones don't.

yeah, it seems a silly point to ask. but, on the other hand, who would give a powerfist unit frag grenades if they had the choice? Thanks for the quick response guys.

yes, you have to equip the entire unit, but there are some units which will not entirely consist of grenade packing models.
ex. inquisitorial henchmen, warriors come w/ frag + krak, but the chirurgeons in the squad can't get them. so the unit has to be divided into those striking at I-10 and those striking at I-3
just so you know

but in that case it's much easier to determine which models have and which don't.
