I have had this discussion with my son and I wanted an outside opinion. My statement is this, that a Necron army with two or three Monoliths is tough as hell. Deep striking the monoliths allow you to claim table quarters and increase the mobility of your army. Monoliths being armor 14, and with that special rule about no extra armor pen dice from meltas, etc make them extremely tough. About the only thing that kills them consistently is a strength 10 powerfist on a dreadnaught. I know two or three monoliths are a point sink but I think they could shoot the hell out of whatever is near as well as surviving to either contest or clam table quarters. I also am aware this would lower your phase out number for your troops but if played well (hiding when numbers get close to phase out, etc) I think this could be an interesting army to play against. Any thoughts? Brian thinks multiple monoliths are not good, but I disagree. So what is everyone else's opinion?

three monoliths in a 2000pt army mean you are fighting (phasing out) 1250pts of necrons.
what do you do with that? that means you'd have to kill at *most* 60 necrons, not even allowing points for a lord here, to win.say he has staple tolled up lord... and 1000pts in warriors?
65 wariors, 48 dead to phase out.
8 dead necrons per turn.
ignore the monoliths.

Thats kinda of funny you brought this up. I made a necron list about 2 hours ago and it contained 3 monoliths(705), 1 Lord, res orb and Veil of darkness(200) and 3 squads of 20 warriors (360*3=1080) all for 1985. PO# is 15
Monoliths are dead 'Ard to kill. Though the tau do have thier ways to do it easiaer than any other race. I figure you keep sucking warriors through the portal to reroll failed WBB roles, Res orb on the lord for obvious reasons, Veil of Darkness to Teleport a squad of 20 near a vehcile or squad that is giving me problems. 20 FLayers should get a vehicle in rapid fire range right? 40 shots, 27 hits, 4 maybe 5 glances? good odds? The liths can also blast the 'Ard stuff in your opponents army.
With the recent "Eh whatever" attitude for army selection now adays I figured why not join in on the fun? :^D

Glad someone agrees with me, thanks Ron! While I don't think this is an awesome uber, win all the time army, I think there are many armies that it would drive nuts. Played right it also is a tournament spoiler, since I think three deep striking monoliths ruin Tau (after all the monolith is a great shooting tank as well as being hard as nails to kill), and placed properly would drive deamon bomb armies nuts. I can see a well placed monolith also shooting squad after squad of guard with little they could muster to fight back. I'm not saying that Necrons are my next army either but the thoughts of fielding three monoliths and several squads of warriors have run through my mind as well.

I'd like to see this army just to break up the hum-drum of the same old necron army showing up. I've noticed that no matter what army you discuss, there always seems to be a Standard Configuration that most of the versions out there are based upon. This may just be a gaming illusion, but it definately applies to some armies, and possibly all.
This monolith idea is fun and different. Sure, your phase out number isn't great, but that's a risk you take for a more interesting army. That's the way this game should be. Take a few risks and make it interesting. Many of the players here fall into both categories. The same old same old and the something different, and I've even seen a few players who can go either way based on mood. That's part of the reason I like playing around here. Not always stuck with monotony. But surfing the web reveals the same thing over and over again with little variations.

MONOLITHS, ARE LIKE CALORIES FREE 7-UP! NEVER HAD IT, NEVER WILL! DON'T NEED MONOLITHS, THAT'S 29 WINS 3 LOSES, (LOST TO CHAOS ONCE AT THE DEN, KEVIN AT THE DEN, AND THE "PHASE OUT MASTER" COLONEL CATACHAN @ SIMCON). I HAD THIS WRITTEN DOWN FOR STAT'S BECAUSE I'M MAKING 3 MORE CHANGES @ 1850 & 2000 points. MONOLITHS, PUT LIGHTS IN THEM, USE THEM AS LANTERNS ON YOUR PORCH, or GET 10 OF THEM AND USE THEM AS BOWLING PINS. P.S. THERE OK, NOT MY STYLE, I TAKE NOTHING THAT LOWERS MY PHASEOUT NUMBER, (LIKE THAT'S A SECRET), AND I DO LIKE THE LOOKS OF MONOLITH MODELS. CIAO! ;D ;D ;D

Things that Dragon is wrong about... 1) The monolith is a cool looking model! 2) Necrons can be fun without maxing out your phase out number. 3) Stats mean nothing, remember this is grow men playing toy soldiers, its all about fun (and watching Shaun drink Knob Creek at tournaments.) 4) Boring armies are not fun to play. 5) Necrons DO have some high AP weapons and they ARE on the monolith! That's it for now, Major SoB out!!!!

ahem...
i should be there for a game sunday...
the Chaplain is not quite finished... i suck... but he's in the car.
i do think monoliths look cool.
it is fun to watch Shaun drink 'The Knob' at tourneys, as long as you aren't drinking more than one shot with him...

IT SOUNDS LIKE MAJOR SOB WILL BE WIN NUMBER 30.
1) BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, (OPINIONS CAN'T BE WRONG).
2) NECRONS MAX. OUT ARMY LISTS UNDER 1500 points SUCK, BUT @ 1850 & 2000 CAN BE MORE FUN THAN MARINES, (OPINION ONCE AGAIN CAN'T BE WRONG).
3) I HAVE A TOY SOLDIER THAT'S MORE FUN THAN, OOPS WRONG GAME.
4)" I'LL MAKE YOU AN ARMY LIST."
5) NOT AGAIN, GO WITH THE LANTERN CONCEPT.
GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND, AND DON'T FORGET THE CIALIS. ;D ;D ;D

Im going to have to agree with SOB here. The monlith is pobably the coolest and Most Novel idea for a vehicle and infact its the necrons only vehicle.
You dont have to make a necrons list that maxs out under 1500 points. This game doesnt have to be about Min/max squads/po#. I suppose its what you make of the game...however Im starting to see that in competitve settings its really what your opponents make of the game...but it doesnt have to be, that was the point.
Yeah, thowing up records...hmmm. What to say about that. I used to keep track with my IW until I saw the futility in it. No one cares other than the person that is keeping track.
And SOB is right again, The monolith is a source of a High (or low rather) AP weapons. If someone chooses not to use it and then complain about how there isnt any high (or low) AP weapons in the army well, that just seems ludicris to me.
You know, its like you Have a pistol, an M16 and a Missle launcher. A Tank come barreling down at you. You keep fireing the pistol into the tank, then the m16. Nothing happens. You turn to the Rocket Luancher and say, nah, I dont want to use it and continie to plug away at the tank...end result you get crushed by the tank.
The tools are there, its up to the player to use them or not.

Drop the Destroyer Body, youll be too tempted to have him go off on is own and attack something he cannot beat. He may have a warsythe but he is no beat stick. Have him stick with his troops and support them.
Get a Res Orb, this is almost a requirement in a necron force. If your not playing the min/max game (kudos if your not) then you will need this wargear to keep you few warriors alive.
the Chronometron....is a bit obsolete in this current version. Not sure if Codex Wargear addresses this item. Get rid of it...if you want to use soemthing no one else takes use the Gaze of Flame. You will be assualted you might as well soften the blow.
flayed ones: what do you plan on doing with these? This unit cannot go unsupported, they are not beat sticks. They have disruption fields...are you going tank hunting? Add more warriors if that is the case, they are just as good and cheaper.
