So the time has finally come to start army #2. I'm writing this post because I want some real feedback regarding my choice. I have two major ideas kicking around in my head (narrowed down from about 20). What I want to know is if I'm walking the line of cheese or if I have some actual ideas. Idea 1: River Dragons (Tau)Now hang on. Before you get the cross and the nails out, let me say in my own defense, I only have 1 rail rifle in this army build. I really enjoy the thought of a truly mobile tau force. To that end, I wanted to make an army where everyone has a means of hauling. That means all the fire warriors have devilfishes, all the heavies are skimmers, ect. Now, I don't use kroot, I don't use vespid. This has nothing to do with gameplay or a WAAC theory, far from it. I just think they're really really ugly. I think this style of play will be a challenge to both me and my opponent, but not so much so that it becomes a matter of I set up and win. I could be wrong, but that's why I'm posting this in the first place. ********* Idea #2: The Night Watch (Eldar)Obviously the details of this army are subject to change in accordance with the new codex coming out soon. The play style I envision is a bit more balanced than with the Tau. I love the way a lot of the models look, so I'd be using quite a few different units. Some unit types I would like to include: -Dark Reaper -Wraithlord -Striking Scorpion -Guardian -Storm Guardian -Swooping Hawk -Ranger -Aurtach -Farseer With so many different units, I would be focusing more on balance on the battlefield with these guys. Honestly I think both are viable options that are fun to play as and to play against. Again I could be wrong, but I'd like to hear what you guys have to say. I'd say don't hold back, but I know there's no danger of that here.

OK, you want opinions, here is mine...
I think Tau would be a horrible idea for you for several reasons. 1) Very bland and utilitarian look meaning that you would probably be bored painting them. 2) Gameplay wise they tend to be very jumpy and sneaky, which is annoying for both you and your opponent. 3) You said you would not use the Vespid or Kroot due to their look, and I also think this would limit your play with this army.
So.... I VOTE ELDAR and here is why.... 1) I think your personal style of painting would fit well with the eldar and allow you room for your creative style and the freehand work you seem to enjoy. 2) Eldar is the next codex due out and by all indications bigger and badder than before. I never have considered you a power gamer, but I am sure a victory once in a while would be nice and this would be the army to do it. 3) Eldar have a less boring style of play and many more units to choose from that I think you would like. 4) New models are due out and some of them are outstanding. ( Warwalker, Autaurch, etc ) 5) In our gaming group, few people currently are playing the Eldar. I know Ben, Jay, Tommy, and Dave all have armies but they are rarely seen. I would like to see some Xenos played more frequently.
Take my opinion for what it is work but I honestly think Eldar owuld be your best fit.

I have to agree with Doug (Even if he did leave me off the list of Eldar players due to my current absence). Eldar is a visually diverse army that will allow you to paint to your hearts content. And, they are an army that has some power. Because of the variety of units, you can play different armies all the time, and taylor it to any style of play. You want a sneaky jumpy army, no problem. You want a firebase army, can do. You want a hand to hand army, why not. They got it all. The down side to having it all is that they are often fragile and the point cost is higher than many other armies. So they do require some finesse. But since most of us know you are both a player and a gamer, Eldar would be the better choice of the two you listed. Just my $.02

I think you would be happier with Eldar, wish I played mine more, but I'm stuck on this Chaos thing right now. You have a shooty army already in Spacemarines going to another shooty army might not suit you. The MAJOR has it right about painting, for you it's bang for the buck, (hours of fun per model). You're far to creative to go with TAU although I do like Courtney's & Tommy's TAU paint jobs. Eldar have good points & bad, units are expensive and I tend to spend a lot of time figuring how to build a good army list. BIEL-TAN is the way I'm headed, I have about 1500 points, plus the use of "THE DRAKES"(aka Chad) 1800 points. Eldar have great looking models, uniqueness with and aura like no other army. When TAU first came out, this is what I thought they look like: LEGO'S, DEEP SEA DIVERS, TOILET BOWLS, UGLY BIRDS or FISH and BIG WEAPONS THAT HAVE SHIPS HOOKED TO THEM. JUST MY TAKE, WHAT EVER MAKES YOU HAPPY IS THE RIGHT DECISION! CIAO! AND I'M TAKING SHOTS AT TAU, JUST HAVING FUN! : ;D ;D ;D

I personally would go with Eldar. Heres why...
1.) There is lots of opportunity for some awesome freehand. Tau are sort of mundane in comparison as far as models go.
2.) Eldar will be new and shiny. They will have lots of news toys and some sweet models.
3.) We have enough full time tau players. Eldar would be nice.

How can you not like the killer chickens of doom?! Kroot are a kicka$$ unit in the new DoW game but I digress,,, Lets examine 3 considerations when choosing between the tau or the eldar. Firstly the modeling aspect(pun intended) and conversions. Eldar,,, hope you have a jewlers saw cause the majority of these guys are metal. Not a big deal if you don't plan on changing alot or want to use masses of guardians. Tau are all plastic except for the vesipid and pathfinders. Thats a wealth of fairly easy conversions. Eldar armies are known for being painted with alot of freehand designs, symbols and vibrantly painted. That being said you could do the same with tau. Its your army, paint it as you like. Which armies models do you like the best and would enjoy painting the most. Heres the largest distinction between the two. Gameplay. Tau especially the list you probably designed, are strait forward. Shoot the crap out of your opponent. Use JSJ to its full advantage and keep the infantry mobile. Annoying to your opponent? Maybe. Other armies have rules that can be just as annoying. I agree with RangerDude about the eldar playing points so I won't repeat them. Borrowing an army to try out would be a good move at this time. Try them both. Maybe after one or two games your decision will be easier. Good Luck!

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I definitely agree that the Eldar seems a better choice for me, especially after the points made about painting. I guess I'll be getting me some aliens soon.

Well my vote would be eldar too for many reason already said above so I wont repeat. I think you could turn out some very impressive looking eldar with your free hand painting. Im eager to see some of your work.
And doug, as well as other people out there that think the same way:
Can you blame Xenos player for not wanting to play thier armies when all you see is marines, marines, marines? (With the exception of the Tau and big bugs) I think you have to be lucky (or how ever you want to put it..skillfull?) to be sucessfull. But anyways.
Yeah Team Xenos

I agree with you 100% Ron in your observation torward marine. I am not so sure why marines seem to be so popular, but my guess is that they are a solid army, very forgiving in play style and easy for the beginner to paint as well. I do see other armies around, especially last weekend where there were marine players, even ones that are held up as "bad" like Black Templars, but I also saw Tau players( at least2 players), Necrons (3 players I believe), Nids (2 or 3 I think), and Eldar, both Dark and "Good". I don't think Orks were represented, but rumors of work on their codex were circulating if that helps. I am not so certain that this isnt a local bias we see, but I also seemed to be wandering off the topic...
I agree 100% that James' painting skills will yield a spectacular looking Eldar force and I am anxious to see it when he finishes.

I think your painting style would go very well with Eldar as well. But I have to say from experience that I hope you have better luck with your selection of eldar squads. All the units you mentioned are the ones I play quite regularly..and the ones i loose with quite often (yes, I hear all your comments already...shush!). They are a tough choice of units to balance - some good shooty, some good hth, but not enough of either to really tip the scale of most scenarios. Think about adding Dire Avengers, I think they wioll be the way to go with the new codex and will compliment both aspects of a balanced Eldar army.
'nuff said
Oh, and lots of Wave serpents....yeah, lots!
