I know, I know, it is all situational, but I have been following a discussion on Warseer about how much the new Harlies suck (yeah, kinda thought that was funny myself) and their debate on the best Eldar assault troop. Just wanted to see what everyone here thought since I put way more value in DaBoyz collective opinion that the cattle grazing on the web as a whole.

If I had to pick a unit and point at them and say "You're in close combat now", I'd go with the scorps. I think with the new rules regarding targeting and multiple units in combat, and the new beefy gear the boyz in green have, not to mention the 3+ armor, the striking scorpions are as solid a CC unit as you could ask for.

I pretty much agree with James. In a lot of ways, the scorps have the best survival rate. Some of the others will survive as well or better, but their ability in CC doesn't match. If the Eldar had a transport that could be assaulted from, banshees might be better, but it can be tricky getting them into combat safely sometimes. Warp spiders are better at shooting and running. Same with Hawks for the most part. I might change my mind when I see the new codex, but I doubt it.

you can say the 3+ save is good, but i believe hariquins will go first and smack you down before you swing.

The harlequins have the potential to be burly as hell and if the hit at the right time and the right place it can be devestating. Skorpians to marines are mediocre, to orks they are devistating. I think that the harlequins are a all emcompassing squad, good vs armor and good vs horde...Power weapons + Rending, High Init, furious charge...and I could go on...
When measuring a squads "power" you have to put them in certain circumstances and the harlequins come out on top for alot of them. vs armor, vs 3+ save and vs hordes.
My opnion of course.

I guess I don't see what the big thrill is with the Harlequins, For the most part they are just overpriced Daemonettes. A full squad of them (with kiss) is at 240 pts, thats a dang expensive assault squad. Equal to 16 Daemonettes (I know max size 15 for daemons) I'm sure the Harlequins win this fight due to the higher initative and extra attack, but my point is just deal with them like they are deamonettes. Blast 'em with firepower. You will probably get a round of shooting at them, unlike the deamons that get summoned and sent right into HTH. When you see them on the table just treat them like a squad of deamonettes, you have all seen that before and delt with it.
As far as them being the best eldar assault troops, yea I'm sure the are in the top 2 or 3, but they better be at that cost (with all the upgrades this can be a 272 pt squad...ack). Remember also that banshees still swing first on round 1 of the assault. And 10 banshees (160pts) = about 7 Harlequins with kiss (168 pts) and the banshees average 5 dead Harlequins on the assault, the 2 remaining are most likely screwed. (30 attacks, 15 hits, 7.5 wounds, 2.5 saved = 5 dead) and if the banshees shot there pistols in there first ...those two where dead before the assault.
I guess it all matters on who gets the jump on who and if your comparing equal point squads. I think you will see alot of little 6 man squads of Harlequins in falcons...and since the falcon is near impossible to stop now they will be just like daemonettes...ugly far more manly than me looking ones that get pooped out the rear of the falcon and sent into assault just like the daemons.

Now that I have the codex, I would like to bring something up. I've always liked the Warp spiders, and the redo on them has made them so much better IMO. I wouldn't say they are the best at assault, but they fill the role nicely. The 3+ save helps with survivability, they have an assault 2 str 6 gun, and they can pop in and out of assault. Plus, they are highly mobile. This mobility makes it much easier to get them where you want them and have them working the right situations. Sure, they are a little pricey, but not all that bad considering their capabilities. Cheaper than an assult marine and I think they are more versatile. They can run and gun, or gun and charge, popping back out to shoot again if needed.
Just 2 more of my cents.

Warp Spiders are definitely better!
Has anyone else noticed how GW nerfed Eldar anti-tank weapons? Granted Missile Launchers got a little cheaper, which is good. But Brightlances got hella expensive, and no better. Why are they more expensive than a friggin lascannon!? Not to mention BS3... I'm not surprised if Brightlances go extinct.
Wraithguard are still expensive, Fire Dragons still transport-dependent. Swooping Hawks are now a viable option, although they are also fragile and not likely to survive to close engagement with a vehicle...
