Have the Dark Angels been upgraded from Dresses to Togas?

Its part of the dark angel wargear. Veterans wear dresses but once your accepted in the inner circle you get to drop the dresses for togas. You also have to stick feathers to every part of your armor as well as weapons. Interesting armor but why do they have to be static.

Good answer and god questions Eric. The thread I found these images in eluded to the new DA's being plastic with the comand being convertable much like the Space Marine Commander. I think the similar pose here suggests that they both came from the same basic model with add on accessories . Still I like it and am excited to see if the get the new codex right or if they became Black Templars in green.

Sweet. They're keeping the old skool feather head for the one model.

Yah, but those are both metal models... I'm sure of it and any of you who think about it will see it too. There's no signs of it being plastic anywhere except this mystical thread SOB found. It's just GW's way recently of taking a basic model and modifying it to get multiple models out of the same basic sculpt. Famous examples of this are any of the new Imp.Guard leaders, guy spread eagle with bolter / chainsword on one model, and then in the same blister you get plasmt/chainsword, pwr weapon being another variant, etc.

The Backpack and the Banner have the thickness and 'smoothness' that are typical of plastic models though.

Not really, the backpack itself is thinner then the normal plastic ones and the banner pole being built into the banner is reminiscent of all the new metal banners they have made for marines recently. Also despite they're overall simialier pose, those are obviously not from the same "kit" if they where plastic. tehy have totally different legs, torso, capes, arms etc.
The sword is even modeled into the foot so the purity seals wrap about the tip. Definitely metal.

I agree with Norton. These guys are just too bulky to be plastic. I really can't see a realistic way to model that cape as a plastic piece that wraps all the way around the character. It actually starts on his right shoulder pad and goes all the way over to the left. But let's look at it even as a separate piece. The mold of the cape is so restricting that it would only allow the very static pose that we see above, thus negating the entire point of a plastic (customizable) kit. At least they finally got the realistic side of new marine design down. These poor chaps are so hunkered down under the weight of their armor and adornments that all they are capable of is standing in a semi-dramatic pose. A nice effort, but not really what I was hoping for. One of the biggest attractions for new marine sets is not just for the chapter they were created for but for all of them. The Black Templar release was a great example of this. With a few icons shaved off, any marine player had a huge new addition to his bits box. Unfortunately, with metal models like the Templar Sword Bretheren, and now the Dark Angels HQ, GW is really missing what could be a killer play. Just having the dark angel/black templar/whatever adornments on a separate sprue, these guys would sell like mad. They could do it like the little shield sprue that comes with Grey Knight Terminator blister packs. That way you're not only opening up your new product to the admittedly massive marine market (check out that alliteration yo!), you'd be ensuring that every last dark angel player doesn't end up with the exact same HQ.
