Seeing as there seems to be an interest lately in "other" games, I figured I throw this out there.
Rules published by GW, WAB is based on the Warhammer Fantasy system (big blocks of troops, same combat system, etc) but without the magic and big flying monsters.
It's much more tactical than WHFB, (which might not be what you are looking for) almost all troops are the same(humans, duh) - varied by weapon skill and expanded weapons.
Armies are based on history. Romans, Vikings, Huns, Egyptians, Samurai..etc. All armies can fight against any others, though there tends to be stronger lists than others, especially as you get later in history. Again, if you arent that into history/historical warfare, it might not be all that interesting to you.
Armies are published in periods. You buy an army book, you get all army lists on that period, for example, "Alexander the Great" features Macedonian, Indian, Persian, and Alexander's - multiple army lists per book, not just one (ala WHFB, or 40k)
One of the best parts perhaps, is GW does not make ANY miniatures for the game. Thanks to hundreds of miniature manufacturers who do not gouge you, WAB is actually reasonably costed. There are varying degrees of quality between makers, GW level detail and prices with Foundry,Perry brothers, to $27.00 a bag of 30 decent metal minis from Old Glory. I recently bought a full 1800pt Gaul barbarian army from Old Glory during a 40% sale for $115. 120+ infantry & 10 cavalry.
Boldo and I are planning to play WAB more regularly - the last thursday of each month. There are extra armies now if anyone in interested in trying it out.
GW just released updated rulebook should be available in the next month or so.
Heres a link to some WAB love:
