Oy, So I decided to try my hand at NMM, mostly because I somehow determined spending 3-4 hours on a single trooper wasn't nearly enough time. I tried my first shoulder pad tonight, using the metal ultramarine pad as my test. If the response if positive enough, I'll probably end up repainting the entire army. Not that I wasn't going to do that anyways, I just thought I'd make sure I got everything the second time through. Anyways, take a look and let me know what you think.

Maybe if we had something to compare it too we could give you a better judgement.

It looks nice, but I agree with Ron. Can't really give a good critique without something to compare it with. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of NMM, but it can gice a good look if done right.

VG first attempt on a difficult technique.... hard to pick light direction. Two criticisms: a. drill out the barrel on guns b. mold lines on helmets and backpacks... they are a biotch! Rob

Updated the pic at the top. (Reload your browser if you only see one dude)
I agree drilling gun barrels looks cool. I'm gonna look today and see if I can find a drill that's weak enough to do the job properly. I could always borrow one from my dad, a professional contractor, but I have a feeling the drill would laugh at me and eat the gun in question.
As for the helmets, I just don't know. If it was a simple question of trimming flashing, that's cool. But these things are just wrong, like severely offset. You can see especially from the side how the two side of the mold just did not line up at all.
But certainly there is something to be done. One of the steps in the reshaping of my army will be trimming away anything I can and maybe some greenstuff work to see if I can't persuade it to look more like a single piece instead of two semi related halves.

My thoughts are you are not gaining anything except complexity. The guy on the right looks fine, just add some chestnut ink to give it the rusty color.
You certainly don't want to make it more difficult to paint just because you can. Now if it adds value to your painting that is a different story.

Very good work on the NMM James.
Couple of suggestions:
The NMM looks slightly off. Not in how it was done, but where the line for the horizon is. It would look perfect if the shoulderpad was straight up and down. It seems to me that the line for the horizon should be parallel with the arm, and not paralell with the bottom of the shoulderpad.
The blue of the marine seems a little bit dark and dirty. There should be a little bit more in the way of highlights.
Get yourself a pin vise. Do it. Do it now. They've got them at Dan's Crafts and Things. It'll make drilling out the bolters hella easy.
You really gotta trim those mold lines. Even on a bad offset like that I find that using a knife to scrape in the direction of the mold line will even things out eventually.

James - reread your original post,
If your going to re-do all the Smurfs try: - blue ink wash - black lining - lightning blue/ other lighter blue highliight on raised areas - definetly do the NMM on shoulder pads - purity seals ROCK on UM's , the more the better!

If your gonna do that on the shoulders ( I agree with rotnak on the horizon line) then you'll have to do every bit of exposed metal on the model. That would be like highlighting helmets and nothing else. All or nothing!

Mold lines are definately killing you.
I agree with most of the posts given so far. The only disagreement I have is the thought about making painting more difficult because you can. It's the best way to become a better painter. Not that you really need help there.

man, all this talk of light direction and horizons makes me wish i paid more attention in art class.... guess I was too busy flirting with the girls..
and, yes, I know my painting sucks in comparision to most of you guys...I have learned to accept that and be happy in my mediocrity.
nice job james. the side by side really does make it easier to see what you accomplished.
