post the scores!
I'm curious how I placed... I had a meeting at 6, so I had to leave right after the awards.

Yeah, what Ron said! Thanks a lot Jay, Chris and Shaun! I had a great time and played against some great other players. I'm painting the last parts of my army as I type this. Gotta get this done before I take my next 11 month panting sabbatical...

Thanks to the Da Boyz for putting on a great event.
Had five great games this weekend and enjoyed meeting people in the area. Looking forward to future games.

Jay - it might be cool to set up a GT de-brief session in the near future - maybe at the store on a Thursday or Sunday - where people who attended could come just talk about this year and brainstorm ideas for next year? I think it helps to discuss this in a group setting because it gets the idea flowing. it would also be a good time to get volunteers committed to helping with the event next year.

If ever I hated eldar, I hate them now more than ever. I had 153 points going into the last round. I came out of the last round with 154 points. I placed 7th overall. If I had done well last round, I might have been top 3....
The eldar guy I played against nominated his 10 man wraithguard squad as his suicide squad. then he attached Maugan Ra and Eldrad to it. thats an 800 point squad... that is fortuned and fearless. I try to get into position to take him down... but he pen 6's 3 of my tanks on his first round of shooting... even though I had smoke. Then, when my assault marines are in position to attack his suicide squad, eldrad's runes of warding cause me to roll a 12 on my psychic check for the librarian, and he is wounded. then he makes all his hits and wounds with ra and eldrad... and the wraithguard manage to kill my thunderhammer sergeant. the librarian flees... comes back later, tries to use avenger again, and AGAIN he fails his psychic check.. with a 12... and dies. terminators got bogged down and overran because the assault marines couldn't hold back the wraithguard unit.
And then I had nothing left that could stand against him... gah. I know i'm ranting here, but 2 special characters attached to an already crazy durable troops squad is such utter BS that i'm fairly angry about it... yea, I know he took a hit in comp, but it wasn't enough... lists that ooze that much cheese should be made to play against other lists like that, not one I designed to be tough but fair to play against.
/rant.

Thank you to everyone who helped out and everyone who played. Overall it was a wonderful tourney and Jay, Shaun and Chris did an outstanding job running this event. I had a good weekend and look forward to helping with next tournament.
I know Jay is looking for feedback, both positive and negative. I also have expressed the need to rework the comp system to him. It is not an easy thing to do and no matter what you attempt somebody will have an issue with it. Overall most of the armies there were fair and balanced, but like you Steve I also ran into the Nidzilla list that I felt I had no chance of being competitive against. I do think the comp hammer should have hit harder against the Uber Seer Council from Hell and the Nids but that did not ruin my fun. Next year this should be considered, maybe boosting comp from 10 to 20% of the totals?
Again good suggestions are welcomed. Again thank you!

well, jay and I had an idea as to how to maybe fix this... subtract the comp score from the battlepoints score when determining pairings. that way the "harder" armies are all at a negative modifer in battle points when pairings are determined, so they play each other mostly.
Thinking about that now, I don't know if that would work, because people who just plain do poorly would also be at the bottom, and end up playing "hard" armies...
Perhaps if we take the battlepoints, and add the compliment of the composition score?
Example... my comp score was 35. the "compliment" of it would be 15, the difference between it and 50... so take my battlepoints score of 153, add the 15, and thats my ranking score... my opponent would have a compliment of 37, so add that to his battlepoints score, and get his ranking score. higher ranked players face off, so the beardy cheese armies are all at the top, playing each other, the well comped armies are in the middle, and the people who just can't play are at the bottom.
then when the time comes to tally overall scores, disregard the modifers.

I don't understand any of that math, but it sounds like a good theory.
I, too, played against Greg Sparks and his redic eldar army. There were a few times when it looked like I might do alright, but most of the time it was an uphill battle. Playing a close ranged shooting army against a unit which is essentially invulnerable to shooting is not easy.
There is a reason why there is a difference between best general, and best overall winner. WH40k is supposed to be a game where people can take what they like best in the hobby and excel. For some people its the list building aspect that pleases them the most. If someone is great at building lists, why not recognize that?
I guess what I am saying is that if you come into a game with a mindset of "I'm boned, and that unit is ruining a good time" you should instead think "Here's an immense challenge, If I hold my own I've beaten the odds, and if I get stomped I will certainly learn from it."
Having said that, I def. got stomped and learned. Hence....the smoking boots award.
