I have watched from the shadows on this thread, drawing amusement from both sides. Now here are my opinions, take them for what you like...
I agree with Alex, comp should be a handicapping system used to reward fair armies and penalize over the top beatsticks. I also agree with Chris that if a matrix is used it should accomplish this fairly and affectively, not leaving "gaps in the armor" for the consumate power gamer to sneak in and skirt the system.
I like comp based tournaments, and anyone who doesn't just needs to refer to the recent GW GT circuit. Ummm, you might be a powergamer if you can't see my point there... That being said, I understand judging comp fairly and accurately is not an easy task. Everyone whines about player judged comp, everyone whines about matrix based comp, judge based comp also takes its shots, as well as the dreaded no comp too, so what is the answer? I think comp should be a system that is fair to as many people possible and should encourage a fun time be had by all the players involved. Ok so what do we do?
Basically, do what you like but understand the consequences involved. If you make a matrix have it be fair to every army involved not just the armies you feel play fair. Some armies are low model based by their very nature and should also be capable of scoring perfcet comp just like the heavy troop based, rank and file style armies. Some armies use magic and are magic based. These armies should not be penalized for using the magic required to play that style of army, and yes, I do understand the difference between playing an average army and one that is over the top with magic as well.
While I like the idea of the scoring matrix as being absolute and capable of predetermining players scores, I also dislike the inherant bias that is built into it. It does favor certain armies while discouraging others. Theme is not considered in scoring and I believe this should be one of the reasons we play, and yes "Because its good" is not a theme, I get that too. That being said keep up the good work and continue discussing ideas. I still am not convinced that matrix based comp is the way to go but I am interested in being proven wrong too.
