OK, which one to go to? Let's consider the pros and cons for each event...
Millennium
Pros 1) It's closer. 2) Better parking. 3) Friendly staff. 4) Inexpensive entry fee. 5) It's 1000 pts per player which means I have a shot of finishing most games.
Cons 1) Same old fixed terrain, no variety, DaBoyz style terrain boards. 2) Chipmunking on sportmanship and comp scores. 3) Same old lame armies, same players. 4) Adepticon prep, need I say more? 5) Nebulous scoring with the guarantee that results and scoring will never be posted anywhere. 6) It's 1000 pts per player which means I will see the most tooled out crap that is distilled down into the most unfun list to play against. In other words, the usual.
Rudicon
Pros 1) Its a con so maybe there will be more people? 2) Variety, hopefully some new faces? 3) Variety, hopefully some new armies? 4) It's 1500 pts per player which means I can bring some more fun items.
Cons 1) It's a con so there usually is a con fee as well as an event fee. 2) Parking sucks at RIT. 3) Food sucks at RIT. 4) Terrain is fixed again (yeah???) and who knows really what it will look like. 5) Nebulous scoring with the guarantee that results and scoring will never be posted anywhere. 6) It's 1500 pts per player which means I have zero chance of ever finishing a game.
Have at it...

This made me LOL.
The terrain we play on is some of the best in the country. If you don't think so, we'll I won't be able to convince you. You could look at the games posted on dakka, but you have a problem with anyone mentioning that site anyways.
You obviously have a problem with pre-set terrain, which is too bad since its a valid option as stated on pg120. Also, March @ MG is the Adepticon team primer which you also disapprove of. But since Adepticon will have pre-set terrain, why not actually practice with the true format.
You won the chance to run a tournament with all your personal preferences, but I don't see your name or your "perfect format" anywhere on this year's calendar. Still the same old female doging and not doing anything to help or improve the events.
BTW I didn't see anything on the March event that indicated painting, sportsmanship, or comp scores, so your point there is pretty obvious trolling because your butt still hurts from some long ago crime against your pride.
This post is ridiculous and a jab at the people who put in the time and effort to actually facilitate monthly events at places that can accommodate more than 6 players. The fact that you continue to spew negativity about our local events on a public forum also hurts the community because it creates a deceptive image that can dissuade new players from showing up and experiencing for themselves.
Travis and Smitty run the best monthly events in WNY. They draw players from buffalo, Syracuse, Erie, and Binghamton. A VAST majority of attendees have fun and truly appreciate their time and effort.
Your points are subjective and largely false. They, like you, do nothing to promote the events, community, or future of our hobby. I voted Millennium because that's where me and my friends will be, having a blast I guarantee. If I could vote for you, it would be Rudicon or stay home where you and your son can throw things against the wall when you get pissed and not ruin other people's experiences.
Next time you decide to waste that much time on a post, try to make it a positive contribution or send a PM to try and change the events to your liking.
Have a great day ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I voted Millenium, the events run there are among the best I have had a chance to play in.
Luckily, no one has decided to judge my poor sportsmanship and terrible painting lately and it has really improved my finishes!

Whoah... haven't seen one of these posts in awhile. I'll jump in as well since I generally attend both Millennium Events and Boldo's area events (Running Gagg and Simcon) each year. Millennium Pros Agreed Agreed Agreed Agreed Agreed Cons Take a look at these shots from Running Gagg. Game one: Yeah, note the BLoS and terrain consistency. Game two: Ok, at least the same color trees make this themed. Again, where is the BLoS? Game 3: Yeah, again BLoS... see a pattern? Try lining up against a guard allied army on this board. Not fun. Just for kicks here are a few pics of the Gagg last year: Our game from last year Nothing against Alex but its the same terrain at all of his events. Look at the BLoS Terrain... wait you don't see it because there isn't any. The one nice thing about Millennium's events is that it is open for the players to bring terrain. I generally bring 1-2 boards worth with me each month and I know Aaron does the same. To date I have yet to see Smitty or Travis tell us not to bring terrain. Plus most of the terrain that we bring or that Jay/Courtney leave at the store is at least themed. Not a mish-mash of terrain pulled from a box. I don't think anyone would turn your terrain away if you offered to bring it. I don't see that going on but hey, I rarely place at events. Really? I think all armies are represented well enough. Only armies I have not seen lately are Dark Eldar, Tau, and Sisters of Battle. But you never see them at other local events either. Your going to see the same armies no matter where you play at tournaments. I dislike it as well but that's the nature of the beast. Don't go to Adepticon so it doesn't bother me. I'm just looking to play some games with friends once a month. Don't handle scoring so I can't agree/disagree. Again, I rarely place. Guess what was at the Running Gagg, same players, same armies and same lists. Guess that is what everyone is running all over. Rudicon I'm basing these comments on the Running Gagg which is run in the same venue by the same TO so these comments should be valid. Pros Nope. If it were not for the Buffalo crew coming in from the snow storm their would have only been 4 people plus Alex as a ringer. With Buffalo we numbered 10 including Alex. Nope, see above. The usual Gagg people did not show. Walter, You, Shaun, and a few of the other guys did not show. Paul, myself, and Brian H were the only regulars there that weekend. Nope, the Gagg had 1 Space Wolves, 2 Chaos Marines, 1 Tyranids, 2 Grey Knights, 1 Eldar, 2 Blood Angels, 1 Dark Angels. Maybe, fun is what you make of it. Cons Yup, $15 for minimal prize support at Gagg Agreed Agreed See pics above. Guarantee you will see the same as pictured above. Ha, scoring was done incorrectly between rounds. Ask one of the Buffalo guys or Chris P (Can't remember who got scored wrong but at least they caught it early enough). Try playing Alex as a ringer. He wanders off leaving his opponents left hanging. No real timing enforced. Plus, he seemed to be playing a mixture of 5th and 6th edition rules. Shouldn't the TO know the system of the event he is running? Again, not a slam against Boldo but as a con attendee who pays money to play I expect more I guess. So, I don't want to sound like a cheerleader for MG or Travis but... the above comments kind of speak for themselves. - Kevin

Millennium, also add to the cons of millennium you listed for march " 2nd place already going to Sinistermind/Grubnards and first place to Chris P and Erichs Tyranids This is the most important argument against attending the Millenium event.

First off, a very stern warning on personal attacks. I started this post to encourage discussion ( and it worked ) but, while sarcastic, I also refrained from taking pointless runs at people. Please stick to the discussion without making this all about me. We have been down this road before and I am certain you don't want to revisit that... OK folks, on with the show! THANK YOU to those who replied. I think this topic needed to be discussed. Am I correct? Rewind to January. Travis and his staff adjusted their tournament to accommodate the 40K community so that GAGG and their monthly tournament didn't conflict. I planned on attending both events, but the weather and my work schedule had other plans. Still it was appreciated that an adjustment was made to accommodate the players. Now fast forward to the present and we are stuck in the same quagmire. FYI Boldo and any event organizers reading this, Millennium holds their 40K event on the second saturday of each month. Sundays are wide open, just a thought!!! So this post was started as a forum to discuss both events, see where the community was at, etc. I'm going to skip right over Aaron's rage post since he probably is suffering some ill affects from inhaling toxic melted chocolate vapors and is stressed over that sexual harassment lawsuit from the Oompha Loomphas. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Sorry, couldn't resist, yep I am bad! Seriously though, WE did agree to running an event together and I am willing to uphold my end of that bargain and work with you. Please contact me and let me know where you stand on this. Good pictures Kevin. Worth 1000 words, no, but I think you made a few valid points, however there also should be some Millennium pictures to compare to. Here are my thoughts: Neither event is perfect. There are valid reasons for not attending each one. If anyone thinks they are running the perfect event and they are beyond improvement, then they are stark raving mad. The gap between the perfect event and what we face each month is substantial to put it mildly. Without the conflict of scheduling on the same date I would try to attend both, but due to some poor planning, or lack there of, I, along with others am forced to make a choice. So it comes down to a few issues. - Location- Millennium is closer. Good parking. Definite location so I wont have to hunt for the venue like I did last March at the U of R. I have a few very close options for lunch and I can get a soda without having to seek out a vending machine and hope that I have the right change on me. ( Advantage - Millennium )- Terrain- Both suck, period. Will I be playing on a board with the typical DaBoyz set up ( one large LOS blocking piece in the center with four somewhat smaller pieces spaced equidistantly around the four corners of the board ), a monotype board with absolutely no variety ( the pipe board, the "oh so cool" tan cliff board, or maybe the any of the other boards with only one type of terrain or cover?), or on the other hand do I play on a "Boldo" board which will have a bad conglomeration of fantasy and 40K terrain that looks like the leavings from the bottom of a 3 year olds toy box? Again, both suck. There is a whole section on terrain in the main rule book, pages 88-107. When was the last ( or first time ) anyone played with mysterious terrain? You know there are some really fun things in there like rivers, lakes, pools, forests, jungles and woods ( not just an area of trees ), archeotech artifacts, impassable and lethal terrain, as well as unique terrain ( some imagination required!). I am not saying everything needs to be included but maybe it might be fun to play something other than "Here's a building, that's some woods, a hill, and maybe we can get fancy and throw in a tank trap or two." ( Tie - Fail to both )- Players and their Armies- On the Millennium side I know what I am facing, I can point to most players and know almost exactly what each person will show up with. It doesn't require a crystal ball or any psychic ability, most Millennium players will show up with a hastily constructed, flavor of the month army, painting optional of course. Hey I lobbied for dropping the painting restriction at the start of 6th to encourage new players and give everyone break while they redesigned their armies but 9 months after the release I think its time to start demanding fully painted and assembled lists again. It's a hobby, not chess. If you can't do it all try Heroclix or Magic, no assemble or painting required. Now for RWAG, hmmm I don't know them all to well. I have met a few at events. I don't know what to expect but in my mind that is part of the fun of tournaments for me, meeting new people and seeing new armies. Hell maybe someone there knows how to paint??? ( Advantage - RWAG )- Event Fee- Millennium is $10. RWAG is plus a Con fee to boot. Communication is your friend. ( Advantage - Millennium )- Scoring- Again, I remember back in the dark days of 40K when TO's used to post scores after the event and between rounds. I remember when a scoring matrix or at least an outline of what the points were based on would be posted. Yeah crazy talk... ( Tie - Fail to both )- 1000 pts versus 1500 pts per player- I like finishing my games, so 1000 pts is good. I like bringing some variety so 1500 pts is also good. (Tie - Neither is better, neither is worse )-Missions- Well I know which missions I will never play at Millenium. Yes, I object to a local event being run as prep for a national event especially when some of the players that this event was designed to cater to will not be in attendance because they are too far behind in their painting. As far as RWAG goes I have no idea what the missions might be like, could be good, could be bad. ( Tie - Due to lack of information versus unfavorable information )So judging on this criteria the winner would be Millennium with a score of 2-1-4, hardly a clean sweep, or the makings of a perfect tournament either. As far as staff goes, Millennium is great, good people and a good store. Smitty has improved over the years and does a decent job, he is on time and does his best. Alex also does his best as well, I enjoy seeing Alex and listening to his views on the world and such but he definitely runs on "Boldo" time and hey no one is perfect either! I like them both for different reasons and this is why I omitted staff as being a criteria for deciding. So take this for what you want. Neither is really my first choice, they both are like choosing your prom date between your sister or your cousin when you really want that promiscuous cheerleader. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

- Will do, I'll see about posting some tonight - But you of all people should know that there is no such thing as the perfect event. Look at the fiasco Da Boyz faces each year trying to setup a comp style event versus an event like NOVA which is the opposite format. Both events try to please their respective draws from the community but at the same time draw ire from others. I don't think that either local organizer is claiming that they run the best event and both would probably like input from the community but the best we (the community) can do is throw stones at them. I don't think that there is anything Smitty, Travis, or Boldo can do to prevent me from bringing the latest, spam-filled list to each event without imposing comp but when comp is brought in then all they hear is that they are playing opposite of what the BRB says on page xxx or are trying to impose their version of comp that favors their buddies. Take the events for what they are and show up and have fun if you want, the choice is yours. If you want a fun filled, relaxed game against an opponent with a fluffy list using mysterious terrain and tank traps then give me a call and we'll set something up. Believe it or not, you and I are much alike in our thinking (I know... shudder) - "that looks like the leavings from the bottom of a 3 year olds toy box?"... ha, good one. But as I said in my previous post, offer to bring some of your terrain to these events. Get there early and ask if you can set up a table the way you want. I throw in 1-2 tables worth of terrain in my car each morning before an event in case it is needed. Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not but at least I am making an effort to offer a different playing environment to the event. Want tank traps? I've got a few I made up. Want battle debris, got a crap load of that as well. Heck, not to sound like I'm blowing anyone but Aaron, Courtney, Jay, and Zack all have made terrain and donated it to the store for use at events. As for mysterios artifacts or random terrain, why can't you play them in an event? Ask your partner if he would object to playing those rules for that game. I don't think many would object to it as I don't see them as major game changers. The only reason I don't play them is that I generally forget what they are and once a game starts I don't want to flip around a book to try and remember what each effect does. Maybe I'll make up a cheat sheet and carry it around with me as a reminder for future games. - Let's look at the past few years at Simcon and Running Gagg (I know, I was at those events and I generally ran the non-spammed, non top-tiered lists)... Space Wolves - check, Blood Angels - Check, Necrons - Check, Spam guard - Check, Grey Knights - Check, Spammed Chaos - Check, Spammed Tzeench Daemons - Check. What was missing at those events? Oh right, the same ones that are missing from Millennium... Tyranids, Tau, Dark Eldar, Eldar, and Sisters. Nature of the beast, people are going to play with what they think will win them the game. Plus, those new faces and new armies you are expecting, guess what they are probably running... the same lists you see on dakka, warseer, BoLS, etc. The ONLY exception to this is the one guy I faced off against at the Gagg last year. He played a compy vanilla marine list. Other than that everyone generally brings what you deem as "the flavor of the month beat-stick list." - Have you personally approached these organizers and asked for the scoring matrix or asked that score be posted or do you just throw this out on the boards as an after-thought? Honest question as I never hear it brought up during an event. If you and others would like to see this implemented then ask the TO's. - I think 1000pts is fair plus they are restricting FOC so that there is some level of cutting back on spammed units. This should allow for a full game to be played. My partner and I played a test game against two others and we had no problems with time. - Judging by past events (i.e. Simcon and Gagg) they will be straight out of the book missions or a similar type of mission but with the Boldo twist. Which of course means that everyone will interpret the objectives diferently as they are worded as well as GW's rule set - Agreed, I like all of the area events and while it sounds like I am harsh on Alex I really do like him and will continue to attend his events but I will always advocate for MG events over any other local events for the aforementioned reasons in my posts above. Sure, none are the "perfect event" as I don't think there is such a thing. The best you can do is attend the events that cater to your playstyle and advocate for change if you feel it is necessary. My personal goal for attending events is to have fun. Hell, if you look at the past 5 or so years of my event attendance I have probably only won 5 or so of them. I go to these events realizing that I am going to face OTT armies, Spammed lists, etc... but like everyone else I go for the people that are there and the friendships I have made. If these events aren't your cup of tea then call me up and let's arrange a fun game. I've had plenty of games outside of the event scene during the past years where I enjoy a higher success rate of wins than at events because my opponents are playing like-minded fluff lists. Accept events for what they are and don't forget that not everyone is a power-gaming prick all of the time. Oh yeah Kevin

I have no opinion on this poll other than to say that I'll be at MG playing with Zack; not because I choose it over Rudicon based on pros and cons, but because I made these plans before finding out the Rudicon dates were really the same as the MG tourney. Boldo originally posted different dates that didn't conflict, but then had to change them when he found out they were wrong.
The one thing being mentioned here that I take issue with is the supposed predictable cookie cutter spamming that will be encountered at our local events. I call BULL!!!
Sure the armies people play may get predictable after you get to know them, but NOBODY is playing spammed flavor of the month armies; at least nobody I ever play. I can't remember playing one spammed army in the last several years of tournament going. Who are these spammers?
Sure I play Grey Knights regularly, but I have never taken more than one of anything except for an occasional two dreadknight list and I always make them different and without the teleporters. Plus I haven't taken a grenade of anykind in at least a year. Flavor of the month. My army weighs 20 lbs - pretty sure that is a sign they aren't new.
Is it one of everything Courtney that is the spammer? Doubt it. We know its not Kevin. What about the Buffalo guys? Nogle- nope, Bill - nope, Craig - nope, the new guys - nope, sure they have Grey Knights, but they aren't spammed. Certainly you can't mean Zack's guard? He uses grenade launchers for christ sakes. What about Eric's Deamons? Tzeetch spam - hardly, he takes one of each. C4 or Ron? Nope - these guys aren't spammers either, unless you call deathwing spam, and I hardly think this is fair.
Sure Crispy used to spam deamon princes, but that was years ago. His current Tyranids list is creative one of a kind list that is DEADLY. Aaron's Dark Eldar and Grey Knights are both one of everything lists, although he may succumb to the desire to play more than one psyfleman every now and again. Every time I have played his Tyranid list there has been NO spamming of units of any kind. Just because it was an issue years ago, does not make it one now.
The only time I even remember a threat of spamming in the last several years was when Doug threatened to bring 3 units of 3 oblits. I never saw this, but that would have taken the cake.
Face it guys, as a group we play fairly balanced lists - not flavor of the month and not spammed. ITS HOW WE ROLL. Please drop the spam/flavor of the month crap because at least around here it isn't true.

Actually paul, the point I was trying to make in regards to doug is that no matter where he plays, whether in rochester, monroe county, western NY, NY state, the USA, or anywhere in the world, he is going to see what he perceives as a net/spam/power gamer/waac list because that is what he wants to see. I'm just pointing that if he thinks he will see different lists at RIT vs MG, or Running Gagg vs Simcon then he's in for a shock. I know he knows that, he's just doug being doug.
I fully agree with you that most players here do not run spammed-net lists. It's natural for people to want to bring tough lists to events but my experience is that if you game with them outside of the event scene they tend to play more laid back and fun lists. Aaron is a good example of this. At the monthly and large events he brings a tough, no holds barred list. He does not run a net-spam list but he will definitely give you a tough time. But when we arrange for a game at his place he tends to run more experimental lists or quirky lists that he wants to try out. These games are still tough but just as fun to play.
Hey, when I see you at MG in a couple of weeks lets discuss arranging a large format game like we discussed at Running Gagg.

Nice attempt at the high road Doug, but you aren't fooling anyone. The points you made are thinly veiled personal attacks. Chipmunking soft scores - no soft scoring posted so unless you know something we don't, this point has no basis for the topic of the march team event, a thinly veiled personal attack at someone or people that hurt your feelings. Since we're big on anecdotal evidence around here, the only times I feel that my soft scores were chipmunked were at Boldos events. Same lame armies and players - I've personally attended monthly events at MG on multiple occasions that drew 24 players. Has Rudicon ever, like in its entire history? How many last years? Last years I attended 10 events at MG, and brought 10 totally different armies chosen from a mix of 5 codexes. Courtney, Kevin, Nogel, Bill, Ben, Ron, and C4 have all played at MG events with different armies or lists every month. Again, a thinly veiled personal attack with no factual basis. Tooled out crap... The usual. If you think our "same lame players and lame armies" bring the most tooled up crap, you really are delusional. I've yet once to see a cron air list at a MG event, or a true leafblower, GK razorspam, dual seercouncil, dual nob bikers, or any of the other infamous power builds that show up on BoLS or YTTH. In fact, the most obnoxious build I've ever seen a local bring to the table was triple flamer triple screamer, but that wasn't at a monthly MG event, which is what we're discussing. Like Kevin said, people will try to win as it is a tournament, but you cant seriously say the usual is "tooled up crap". Again, a thinly veiled personal attack with no factual basis. Since photo evidence is welcome and Kevin only showed one side, I'll provide the other. Here's the set I built and donated. It's in the back room and available to casual players and all events. Looks like a lot of variety to me. That swamp and crystal formation sure look mysterious. Here's one from MG September 2012. Look at all those tank traps! Ruins galore, and craters and area off in the corner that was cut out. Hate to toot my own horn but I do bring several sets to every event and only miss 2 a year. MG August 2012. Buildings, ruins, fortifications, hills, BLoS everywhere. Hey that looks like Kevin's eldar, man what a fun game that was when positioning and deployment actually matter due to BLoS. Holy nuts, a proper alien invasion of an imperial city! Painted armies, painted terrain, and not a speck of grey plastic to be seen. Here's some more from MG monthly events. I could post 100 more since you know I take pictures at every one. People can compare my pics to Kevin's and decide for themselves. The words you used to compare them and the fact that you rated the quality of both events equally bad, are indeed a thinly veiled insult. So nice try at claiming the high road and being sternly against personal attacks, but the only difference is you didn't spell out the names. The intent, target, and inflammatory language are all there. Like Kevin, I'm not cheer leading for MG. I've attended nearly every 40k event Boldo has hosted at the armory and advertised on this forum. I'm pointing out that your facts are missing, your points are anecdotal and biased, and your choice of language is in fact, personal attacks on the people who put the time and effort into providing monthly events with adequate space, great terrain, and a fun event that actually draws people from neighboring cities and enough spectators to inspire new hobbyists.

This is the reason why I dislike frequenting this board anymore. I think you all have to agree that no matter what we are going to disagree on what we think is bad/good in terms of play/location/comp/sports/style...or whatever. Everyone is different.
The pointing fingers, the blame game, the insults, the calling out, its not friendly, it's not adult, its not sportsmanlike. It aggravating to see, to hear and to watch. I wish some people would just get it in there heads that opinions wont change. You can argue with someone till you're blue in the face and they wont budge.
Weather it's claiming to take the high road or pointing out that someone is veiling there intentions, who is honestly worse off there? You're both guilty as charged for acting in such a manner. I really don't care where the tournament is, what food is available, parking...meh, whatever. Entry fee? 10-15 dollars...5 buck, who cares. Terrain and Set...it has it purpose for doing it certain ways but the TO has final call. Fine whatever, Comp/Sports/Painting. Again TO. Right now, this has been beaten to DEATH. TO DEATH.
At this point I believe it has come down to this. You don't agree with how things are run/played/the people there. Don't go. It fortunate enough that there are 2 tournaments ran on that day, go to the other one then?
Or, just stop supporting or going to the scene you dislike. BOTH have their flaws, both have there boons. Neither is perfect.
I'm reaching that point i'm my life where I just don't want to hear it anymore. If I don't like the way things are going I just walk away and let those have what they consider fun, their fun. If my input is asked for then I will give it. Otherwise no one cares what I think. But expect me to have the same opinion about yours. It's just that crappy attitude out there that has infected every bitter gamer in one way or another. Some embrace it, some hide it.
Have at it, im done. Chew each other out, call each other out, be spiteful and mean, rude and childish. It just lowers the image you all give this game. And yes, I realize that my post only adds to it, but I just wanted to point out whats going on so maybe, just maybe this kinda stuff will be curbed. Doubtful, but worth the effort.

A few years ago(8 maybe) at our local gaming store my buddy and I got curb-stomped by some guy with nice white necrons.(some guy named Chris Courtney). We knew that competetivly we were going to have to step up our game. A couple of years ago Bill and Nogle invited us to go with them to a gaming store in rochester for a tournament. we had been there before for Ard'boyz and wanted to go back. Since then it is the only store that we go to and they get all of our buisness. Its not so much the place but the people we game with that draw us back. Painted armies(mostly) plentifull terrain, army variety, and of course a much stiffer(and friendly) competition. We dont go back to our local stores here in buffalo anymore because we choose a certain scene. Everybody can do that if they need more from thier gaming. I have fun at Boldos events and millenium. I cant make as many as I'd like too but thems the breaks. but please encourage each other players to join the scene guys. dont bicker on here. Real men dont use the internet to vent frustration....We do it on the battlefield with tiny plastic men(and metal xenos)
